Hi
First pregnancy here . I’m about 4+1 . Baby due 2nd September GP said.
I saw the Dr the other day when I found out and she seemed happy for me to just refer myself to maternity in mid Jan .
Generally really healthy , I don’t smoke or drink and I’m a healthy weight but I do have epilepsy (controlled). On two very safe drugs , been taking 5mg folic acid and pregnacare 2 months prior to conceiving and will continue to take .
Thinking about paying for a private scan at 6 weeks just to ease my anxiety . Does anyone recommend it ? Did it help you ? Just not sure if I can wait til week 10!
Thanks x

@goingtoneedabiggercar it’s not taking over but it’s just every now and then I start thinking about things . Not even been referred to a midwife yet I have no idea what to do and the Dr just said to do it myself . So that’s not helping because I don’t know how to do anything and not got a date to work towards

Do you know where they're based? Mine were in a health centre so I had to call there. If you can't find out just call the drs and ask the receptionist how to refer.

@itsemily Just call your Dr's and ask them how they want you to refer. At my Dr's I called them and they booked my first midwife appointment over the phone.

You should have your first appointment between 8-10 weeks, when I called I was about 5 weeks gone, and my first appointment is on New Year's Eve and I'll be 10 weeks.

I didn't opt for an early scan so my first will be the 12 week scan. I figured even if I have an early scan, it wouldn't change anything. What will be will be. It's easier said than done not to worry, but once you start getting symptoms you might find yourself relaxing a bit.

@goingtoneedabiggercar I think there’s one in the city but I will need to be consultant lead so I think it’ll be the hospital but I’ll give the GP a call on Tuesday when I reach 5 weeks.

@mywrencalls thank you

@itsemily depends on your area, I was consultant lead but the consultant ran a clinic at the health centre, just meant my appointments were all on Thursdays. Also meant I had some appointments with the midwives which was good.

@itsemily self referral is pretty standard practice now, it seems. I was pretty stunned at first that the doc didn't need to see me and ask that I refer myself.

I picked the hospital where I wanted to give birth and then they set me up with midwife care. I have a heart defect and it's upon the booking appointment with the midwife when she goes through all that and then manages your plan. For me, it was a referral to hospital consultant, echoes for me and fetus etc. Once you have the initial appointment, you'll be sorted!! X
