Hi all 🙋‍♀️.

VERY early in my pregnancy. Feeling a tad nervous. My friend told me she had a miscarriage (didn't know I was pregnant) due to carrying heavy suitcases while travelling at 10 weeks.

I have a 3 and a half year old and he they are heavy to pick up from the car seat etc. My current pram is also very heavy lifting in and out of the car. I have been out today lifting my child and my pram in and out of the car (family members with me and knew and didn't even offer to help just said.... be careful 🙄)

Is lifting dangerous in pregnancy? My friend said the first 12 weeks you have to be most careful.

Thank you x

I was still lifting my almost 5 year old while 8 months pregnant - you'll be fine. The main risk is that you'll injure yourself due to the relaxin.

The risk is to yourself ie your back etc not to the baby esp not this early on. Baby is well Protected inside.

PPs are right about the main risk being injury to yourself - the Relaxin hormone makes you more prone.

The sort of lifting to avoid is shifting heavy furniture lifting. Your body will be used to lifting your child so that helps.

Nevertheless, it would have been nicer of your family to help, given they know you're pregnant (I assume).

Your friend's miscarriage wasn't due to lifting heavy suitcases. You will be fine.

The reason why you need to be careful about heavy lifting in pregnancy is due to a risk to your back not your baby. When you are pregnant the hormones relaxin and progesterone make your muscles, joints and ligaments relax and loosen so it can be easier to hurt yourself and strain a muscle.

Thanks so much everyone. I was so worried when I got home. Unfortunately some members of my family do know and just sat in the car waiting for me to lift everything in and out of the car. Feel much better after reading your replies. Thank you all xx
