How much to buy?

I’m about 12 weeks pregnant with my first and have been feeling rotten so spent today fantasy shopping for cute baby things. I realised though I have no idea how much you need in each age size!

Not planning on getting much this early but wondered how many outfits you lovely people needed in each size/age? I don’t want to spend money on stuff I’ll never use if I can avoid it Xmas Smile
Thanks

My youngest had reflux, we went through a minimum of 4 sets a day. Some days we were at almost hourly full changes.

In smaller sizes I tend to just do sleepsuits and vests, they're outgrown really quickly and you don't want anything fiddly on a small one! I worked out how often I wanted to be washing and made sure there were enough to reach that, plus a couple in case of a sicky baby (thankfully! They were very much needed this time!)

Don't buy too many outfits, you're unlikely to use anything but vests and babygros for the first few weeks. Anything else is fiddly to put on Grin

As others day don't waste your own money on cute little outfits, they don't like them, there not comfy and everyone and their dog will buy you cute baby clothes.

I'm going to aim to buy around 15 sleep-suits and 15 body suits in a few sizes. They get through a lot when their little so you need at least 10 to get through 48 hours I'd say.

I'd get a few different sized Muslins for baby sick/burps too.

Muslins are your friend!

My 5 month old is still in vests and baby grows as clothes are not comfortable to sleep in and babies spend the vast majority of time asleep.

Both my babies were too big for new born clothes.

I’m devils advocate.. if you really like a cute outfit get it. You’ll get an absurd amount of gifts but some of them aren’t going to be to your taste/useful... my baby has two feet like the average joe and some how we wound up with 40 pairs of newborn socks through gifts, he obviously never wore them all. I’d also recommend getting a single pack of tiny baby stuff. Ds was charted to be 8lb9 and came out 6lb1oz and absolutely feck all fit him for a good few weeks. It’s also the size that no one seemed to buy (even after he was born)

orangejuicer · 23/12/2019 04:56

Oh I agree, get something you want but maybe in 3-6 when you might contemplate putting him/her in it. I got DS a Christmas baby gro laat year and that was good enough for me. Also bear in mind if you have a big 'un with a big head, nothing will fit! [Grin]

In my experience most people buy you 3-6. So I would concentrate on the other sizes. Like others have said my son was in baby grows and vests for the first few weeks at least. A few people bought me outfits in 0-3 but nothing smaller than that x

OccasionalNachos · 23/12/2019 07:57

Watching with interest. I have bought a couple of vests/sleepsuits each in a range of sizes and plan on doing a supermarket/Mothercare run after the birth (or sending someone else...) to get the most appropriate sizes in bulk.

CrazyKitkatLady · 23/12/2019 08:38

Thanks everyone, that’s all really helpful Smile

Also just to add that Asda first size goes up to 9lb. I found this really handy as 0-1 is up to 10lb and 0-3 is up to 12lb or 14lb x

I never used my baby wrap as too much of a faff to put on. Used a baby carrier a little bit however. You don’t need too much bath stuff either as it can give bay dry skin and I ended up just washing her with water mostly.

zaffa · 23/12/2019 08:58

I currently have a three week old. She weighed 8 and a half pounds at birth and dropped to just under eight before regaining. So I learnt that clothes in up to size one month were much better than newborn, and clothes in 0-3 months are my best friends (she now weighs around 9 and a half pounds) vests and sleep suits. I haven't even used her beautiful hand knitted hats and cardigans yet, and I'm scared I'll miss my chance, but she sleeps a lot and she dribbles and spits up too, and nothing else is practical. I'd get as many as possible. There is nothing worse than it being 3am and your baby is screaming because they hate being changed in the middle of the night and then wees all over themselves as soon as the nappy is off and the cold air hits them - and then not being able to instantly find a vest / sleep suit combination to dress them in. And they are so cheap to get second hand or from supermarkets - is save all money to be spent on gorgeous outfits and just stock up on these too.
I have about eight of each and think I could do with more really.
Outfits in 3-6 months will be much more likely to be worn
Congrats btw - nothing prepares you for how much you're going to fall in love, of the way the hormones affect you. Enjoy every second.

If you don't have enough clothes when the baby is here you can buy them with one click on the internet. So don't stress about having enough, it will be fine.

Aneley · 23/12/2019 21:04

I had an opposite problem to most people who post here. Baby was supposed to be on the bigger size but she came our 5.7lbs so most of her clothes were too big and I wished I got more newborn stuff as most of the things we got were 0-3 and 3-6.
