Vaping and Pregnant

Hi, I’m looking for mums to share real experiences.
I’be been vaping for 3 years now, always 18mg which is the highest strength you can get in a shop. I found out I was pregnant and really tried to cut down. Most days I will vape in the morning, survive the whole day and vape when I get home. Some days I cave in and buy a disposable vape on my lunch break. It’s really hard to cut down and quit but I am getting better.

Has anyone vaped during pregnancy? How did you stop? Was the baby harmed? Did you get any abnormal results?

I’m panicked that I’ve already done some damage. I would hate myself if I did.

I read a lot about nicotine and it’s effect on embryos. I really just need some real life experiences with this, rather than studies I’ve read online.

Anything would be much appreciated!

I don't want to sound dispassionate but what kind of experiences are you looking for? Nicotine is detrimental to foetal development, that's been proven.

I think you have done really well to cut down and should keep trying to stop completely. Your midwife should be offering you support to quit completely. I wouldn't go looking for reassurance from people on the internet that it's okay to vape, just really try hard to stop. It also increases the risk of SIDS so quitting really is the best thing you can do.

I smoked cigarettes until I found out I was pregnant, it was really hard to stop but I went cold turkey as all I wanted was to protect my baby.
I haven’t had one since, best to get support from your mw if you can and try quitting. Good luck

Hi lovely

I found it difficult to stop smoking when I found out I was pregnant, found out very early on 3 weeks, my midwife recommend I vape and got my gp to prescribe me one

It isnt ideal but if its between smoking or vaping obviously vaping is the better choice

I'm now 35 weeks pregnant with a very smooth pregnancy and a big baby, no issues have been detected at this point and I'm classed as a low risk pregnancy when my midwife and hv is aware I vape

But just because my baby is ok doesnt mean everyone's will be

You will get alot of difference of opinions on here, it's your body its your baby but well done for trying to cut down I understand how hard it is, but speak to tour midwife she will point you in the right direction xx

Hi I vape I'm 22 weeks and midwife classes me as a non smoker and says vaping is fine it's the carbon monoxide that's bad for the baby found in cigarettes you get tested for this at every appointment and mines always zero I'm only on 6mg but non of the midwife or consultants I've seen have asked me the strength just if I've gone back to cigarettes everytime said no and they was fine so try not to feel too bad when u have your appointment midwife will tell u same your fine xx

Nat6999 · 21/12/2019 21:05

My friend vaped right through her pregnancy & was fine, she was classed by her midwife as a none smoker.

I read a lot about nicotine and it’s effect on embryos. I really just need some real life experiences with this, rather than studies I’ve read online.

Studies with actual evidence are much better with regards to providing information about the effect of nicotine on embryos than anecdotes posted here based on people’s experiences.

There will of course be people out there who say they smoked or vaped throughout pregnancy and had an uncomplicated pregnancy and a healthy baby at the end of it, but that doesn’t prove anything. It has been proven that nicotine during pregnancy IS harmful. That isn’t the same as saying it harms everyone during pregnancy, just that it significantly increases the risk of harm. (In the same way that not everyone who smokes gets lung cancer, but they doesn’t change the fact that it massively increases the risk of getting it)

TwigTheWonderKid · 21/12/2019 21:34

Why would you take the risk? Just make the decision to stop and do it. Your baby doesn't have a choice about this but you do.

And before anyone gets arsey with me, I was a heavy smoker until the day I found out I was expecting DS1 and stopped immediately. I'd tried and failed to give up several times before that but it was so easy to give up for his sake.

CloudyVanilla · 21/12/2019 21:36

Also nicotine is a harmful substance it isn't just the carbon monoxide in cigarettes that causes issues for the baby.

lettersbyowl · 21/12/2019 21:42

I was vaping at the start of my pregnancy. I tapered down the nic strength over a week or so and then switched to 0% for 2 days, then threw the vape and liquid away. Because it didn't taste or feel right with lower nicotine anyway, I actually wasn't bothered when it came to the day to bin it!!! Highly recommend that method rather than trying just reduce the amount you use it in a day.

Vaping vs cigarettes = vaping is better

Vaping vs oxygen = oxygen is best

Its not just the carbon monoxide thats the issue. Maybe look to reduce the strength and go about it that way.

Delbelleber · 24/01/2020 10:41

I was a smoker. I gave myself a date I wanted to stop by and that was the end of the first trimester. When the time came I had my last one and told myself that was the last one. I had my 12 week scan the next day which helped keep me motivated.
Ive never been tempted enough to go back on my promise to myself and my baby. I have bad dreams just about every night that I have been smoking! I'd be so disappointed in myself if I did.
Be stern with yourself. The risks are real. You can stop you just need to stay focused on why you are stopping.

Delbelleber · 24/01/2020 10:43

Just seen this thread is an old one. Did you stop?

This old thread has been bumped by a spammer.

Here is some reliable info about vaping in pregnancy:

Hey I am currently 10+5 weeks and I have been smoking for about 16 years and have cut out the cigarettes completely and switched to a 2mg nicotine vape and going to go to zero next week (it has not been easy).
My midwife assured me I am doing the right thing even if you are struggling to give up but obviously not doing it at all would be best but I have been classed as low risk despite this. It is not easy at all giving up and think it all depends how much you smoked and for how long.

Crabonastick · 24/01/2020 12:05

I quit vaping quite easily after switching to 0% liquid as I got really bored of it

snch · 24/01/2020 14:15

I'm 9 weeks and vaping really want to stop I find it as addictive as smoking. I'm gonna go down to 0.0 hopefully I'll loose the urge to vape
