So I’m 29 weeks pregnant and DH has just returned from the shops with a delicious looking smoked salmon mousse www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/groceries/sainsburys-taste-the-difference-2-smkd-slmn-hiddn-avcdo-msse-145g?istCompanyId=1e096408-041f-4238-994e-a7cf46bf9413&istFeedId=689af7a8-5842-4d88-be59-1ee5688a81b5&istItemId=wlmtwwqtw&istBid=t&PPC=*&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=Cj0KCQiAovfvBRCRARIsADEmbRILeBZCQRo6kQ2ClOlanqUbmlot_J7x5Jd5HaYS4cesr46dgmZzlucaAunZEALw_wcB.

I know pâté (even vegetarian) is a no-go in pregnancy, but from looking at the ingredients in this am struggling to see anything really sinister looking (and I am really really craving smoked salmon!).

What do you think? Is this another forbidden Christmas goodie or am I safe to indulge drool

No sorry, I don't think you can. I follow my pregnancy app and it says all smoked seafood including salmon is a no-go because of the risk of listeria. Treat yourself to some in a few monthsSmile

According to the NHS website, smoked fish is safe:

Go for it!

Smoked salmon is fine.

With the pregnancy Apps, they are often US based and the food rules and hygiene are very different. If you’re based in the U.K just use the NHS guidelines. When you start using all countries rules, you won’t get to eat anything !

I've been eating smoked salmon! I read it's fine!

Rawrsome13 · 21/12/2019 18:10

Thanks! I’ve been happily eating smoked salmon throughout pregnancy based on the NHS advice, but was more worried about the “mousse” element, as this makes it sound similar to pate. But it looks like this is creme fraiche based which from extensive googling is apparently also fine.

I mean it’s probably not going to help my heartburn but that’s a risk I’m willing to take!

Yep I’d say it’s fine, I went with the nhs advice, and I think salmon mousse is essentially just normal smoked salmon whipped up with some creme fraiche and cream, so I think you’ll be safe Smile

Moltenpink · 21/12/2019 18:18

Yes, the pate guidelines are mostly because it usually contains liver.

BendingSpoons · 21/12/2019 18:18

It's fine, and one of the best foods of Christmas IMO. The issue with pate is it is quite 'wet' and that can harbour the listeria bacteria.

YahooGmail · 21/12/2019 19:05

Ah that's good to know. Sounds like my app (ovia) is ridiculously over-cautious

Darkstar4855 · 21/12/2019 20:56

The issue with pate is the liver content which has high levels of vitamin A. Salmon mousse is fine.

CatintheFireplace · 22/12/2019 12:11

@Darkstar4855 - that's what I thought but the NHS guidance says Avoid all types of pâté, including vegetable pâtés, as they can contain listeria which is a bit confusing as I don't really know what counts as a vegetable pate and what doesn't Confused is olive tapenade a pate? What about tartex? Hmm
