Would you eat lobster?

I'm 10wks pregnant and partner's parents have got us both a lobster to eat when we go over for Christmas.

I understand it's ok to eat as long as it's cooked but know there's a higher food poising risk with shellfish. Do you think I should eat it or avoid it just in case?

I have a phobia of vomit so I always worry about getting sick and sometimes I struggle to tell the difference between me being irrational because of the fear and what's a genuine risk. As it wouldn't be me cooking or preparing it I'd just have to trust it had been done properly, which I'm sure it would have, but not feeling in control with things like this does make me feel anxious. At the same time I obviously don't want to offend by refusing the food they've bought.

Yes I'd eat it. And I did while pregnant. Yummy!

Thetellyisjelly · 21/12/2019 12:02

Yes and I ate it through all my pregnancies.

Yes I would.

Never thought about it, but cooked fish is fine isn't it?

squee123 · 21/12/2019 12:14

yup, I love lobster and it isn't on the NHS list of foods to avoid

RyvitaBrevis · 21/12/2019 12:37

Yes, definitely!

All shellfish aren't equally high risk in terms of food poisoning. I tend to avoid bivalves in general (things with two shells like mussels and razor clams) because they're higher risk and I once had a bad experience with mussels. You should be fine with crustaceans (things with legs) like lobster and prawns if they are cooked and not sitting out on a buffet for a long period of time.

Thanks for all the reassurance. I've never actually tried lobster so don't know if I like it but sounds as though it's only my phobia holding me back.

I wouldn't think someone who didn't know how to cook it would go to the expense of 2 lobsters. So I'd say pretty safe on that point.
As to whether you'd like it. If you like scampi, you'll most likely like lobster (it's way nicer, but about the best comparison I can come up with)
Yummy. Lucky you. I hope you enjoy it x

If they have it already then I’m guessing that it’s frozen, so really nothing to worry about.

Oops... I had muscles, prawns and scallops when I was put today. 🤞

No, not when pregnant, not ever. No shell fish or crustaceans for me at any time. If I knew a lobster had been humanely killed rather than plunged into boiling water, I might consider trying it. Otherwise I'd have nightmares.

Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver have demonstrated how a lobster can be killed quickly and humanely before cooking, I wish everyone who serves it would take that on board.
