Morning sickness advice please

I feel awful/ ungrateful for writing this after being so happy to be pregnant after so long of trying.
But at just over 8 weeks I have started with ‘morning’ sickness. I am constantly nauseous and i’m sick after almost everything I eat and I feel unwell from when I wake up until I sleep. I naively never thought about how difficult this could be. Any advice would be appreciated. Does it level out or get worse?

Hang in there. It gets better. It may get worse before it gets better but it does. Not eating and drinking at the same time may help. Ginger products can ease nausea. Try and stay hydrated as becoming dehydrated can lead to viscous circle of more vomiting. Dont be afraid to call doc and ask if any anti nausea drugs are available. I waited too long with my first, as i thought it was normal to be so ill, before i asked for help, and ended up in hospital on a drip. Keeping fingers crossed for you that it doesn't last too long. Congratulations Flowers

Thank you! I’ve given DP a shopping list of everything that says it will help @Teagoanngoanngoann

I've only had mild sickness so far (only 6 weeks so I'm expecting it to surge soon!), but I find drinking water with a slice of lemon helps stave off the feeling. It's more important you stay hydrated than get food down you if it's really bad.

I also find it's worse if I'm hungry – or too full (though the latter is more like 30% nausea, 70% bloating). If you can eat, try small, frequent meals and keep something close by to snack on (nuts/a few crackers/a banana if you can stomach it). Lots of people suggest having some crackers by your bed so you can nibble on something as soon as you wake to combat the sickness before you get up.

Hi OP, it's so tough isn't it! I really feel for you. I was incredibly sick from 6 weeks until 10/11 weeks, I was pretty much bed bound and have been off work since October with it! I'm 14 weeks now and it has been sooo much better since 11 weeks Smile I still get nauseous a couple of times a day but only actually being sick about twice a week.

I didn't really find much helped, I tried all sorts of things! I did find sucking a mint humbug worked when the nausea hit and sipping on small amounts of water. Ginger didn't help, sickness bands didn't help, crackers didn't help.

As hard as it is just remember it won't last forever Smile your body is doing an amazing job and it will be so worth it. If you are not keeping anything down please go to your GP so they can check you are not dehydrated, there are also lots of anti sickness meds that are safe during pregnancy so you could try those.

Congratulations 🥳

This may not be at all helpful but thought I'd share. I buy a whole white baguette every day. I break it up and carry round in my handbag and eat small bits throughout the day. At work when I go to toilet or to a meeting I try and eat bits of baguette without anyone noticing! If I dont eat I feel worse. Then sometimes I can eat crisps and digestive biscuits as well, but only if I've had baguette first. Sometimes I can also eat tiger bread. So weird!

I’m in the same boat, almost 6 weeks and already feeling like thisSad I’ve found that an empty stomach makes it worse so having crackers or biscuits by the bed to have first thing is helping me. Having lemons in water, ginger biscuits and carby food is also making it a bit better. Smaller more frequent meals sounds like a good idea. I’ve just come back from holiday abroad and was paranoid about being sick on the plane, the travel sickness bands (£10 from boots) which I thought would be crap were actually amazing! I now keep them in my handbag and pop them on when I’m feeling nauseous.

I’ve had severe HG in each of my pregnancies and honestly, none of the old wives tales helped.
I suggest that you go to the GP on Monday and get something prescribed. Don’t suffer over Christmas 🎄

NameChangedForThisImNotNew · 20/12/2019 14:40

You may need to be stubborn with your GP but I’ve had two out of three pregnancies with meds for sickness. If you can’t function then it’s important to get a solution x

piercedmyfootonaspike · 20/12/2019 15:01

I've had 2 HG pregnancies and remember the awful nausea and sickness well. My advice is eat what you can manage and don't worry if it's healthy or nutritious or whatever, your baby will be fine with crisps for a while, keeping down water is most important and the key thing for me was try all the anti sickness drugs until you can find one that works. Good luck and fingers crossed it eases up for you

WeirdPookah · 20/12/2019 15:11

I had morning noon and middle of the night sickness until about 26 weeks.

I ate a lot of potatoes! They seemed tasty enough to eat, but bland enough to not upset anything or cause more nausea. And at least gave some nutrition and energy.

I drank small amounts often instead of just chugging a whole glass full.

And speak to your midwife in case you need rehydration help if it's really bad. Don't be afraid to speak up and be honest how bad it is.

And interestingly my 2nd pregnancy gave me not one day of sickness. Nothing!

Thank you everyone for your replies! Feeling much better now, well less sickness and more headaches! But atleast it’s something

Urgh morning sickness is the pits!

I'm currently 19 weeks and now only have the odd random episode days apart.

My tips for the early days are;
-Aim for high water content things, I found melon, cucumber and soft fruit very helpful on the days I could barely stomach a sip of water

  • keep a little supply of dry biscuits at work/ handbag/ bedside table, I found a little nibble helped when vomiting really wasn't an option!

-a little piece of cheese after vomiting helps tackle the stomach acid.

  • try to remember as you pull over the car on your way to work to be sick in a hedge, this too will pass!!

Congrats first and foremost. I am 23 weeks and still suffering. I found it harder in the early days but everyone is different. I had to eat and be sick and then eat again to combat the acid and had terrible post sickness nose bleeds. I ate literally toast 3 times a day for about 8 weeks. I am on anti sickness and acid reflux meds because i just wasnt sleeping and the sickness and acid was so bad.

I would carry around hard boil sweets or some percy pigs (or equivalent) and some dry biscuits (ritz and crackers) to make sure u always can snack.

Sip water slowly if u can. I couldnt drink water at all

Find food u can eat and keep down. I found high carb foods like pasta, rice and potatos stayed down better. I had to eat because the acid was so bad.

Soda water and fizzy drinks helped me. Worth a try

Dont brush ur teeth first thing. Try mouth wash

Sleep as much as possible and Keep stress to a minimum. I found the more tired i was the worse the sickness got.

Go see your GP or midwife and be honest about how u are feeling. They will help and prescribe something

Be disciplined about when you eat and how much you eat and drink and i hope it will get easier for you.

victhevet · 01/01/2020 04:49

I had it from week 6 to week 18, actually felt like I was going to die but am 29 weeks now and feeling fab!
For me it was so unpredictable and things that would work one day would not work the next.. sometimes it would start at 2am and not give up until 8pm!
It will get better and you will have some days that are better than others, just hang in there and sip water throughout the day.
It will all be worth it Smile
Good luck! X

Engard · 01/01/2020 08:53

Sleep. My sickness is always worse when I'm tired.
Also get anti sickness medication, I didn't take mine at first because I was anxious about how they'd affect baby but after collapsing and being rushed to hospital I was told that dehydration was 100 x worse for baby than the tablets so get them taken!

Laurr · 01/01/2020 20:32

Im seeing my midwife next week so I’ll talk to her then. Thanks for the advice, friends that have had babies recently have been saying they had no problems like this at all. One said she was sick twice and that was it. Now I’m not being sick but still feeling pretty tired and generally not great. Pretty anxious that something is wrong with baby too, maybe that’s just because I’m only 10 weeks, I saw the scan and heartbeat at 6 weeks so I’m hoping everything is ok

Are u taking pregnancy vits? If not, then find ones that go with you

Dont be afraid to go to the GP and request a blood test just to check. You might need some iron tablets.

I'm 7 weeks pregnant and have just started suffering with sickness since returning to work after Christmas. I haven't actually been sick, but the constant sick feeling blergh! This morning made myself a hot cordial (the thought of coffee makes me feel more sick!) and I've had a couple of ginger nuts. 🤞🏼 feel OK!
