Taking my newborn swimming without jabs

I'm due in November and plan to take my new babe swimming asap.
I currently swim at a gym in a hotel where I am a member. It's a small pool, ideal for kids.
My new babe won't have had her jabs (the one's at 3,4 and 5 months) before I take her swimming.
Have any of you done this with your children? Would you do this with your children?

Took DD in a pool at 6 weeks. As a one off. Didn't start taking her regularly until she had got her head control sorted, because I also had 3yo which made it more difficult. DS went from 12 weeks.

i took mine at about 5 weeks, she was fine, apart from i let go of her to see if she could swim(like nb's are meant to do instictively) and err, she didn't, she sunk.

Swimming is a great activity with babies, dd's first swim was in an open air pool in Newquay at 13 weeks! I used to love bobbing around the very warm baby pool at our local baths. We'd go on a weekday and be the only ones in there, and it was great in the winter when it was too cold or wet to be outside with her.

I agree, it's the cold when you get out that you have to watch. Those hooded towels were brilliant, I'd wrap her in one or two of those and get her changed and wrapped up quickly, then sorted myself out. Never had any problems with her getting ill or anything.

Oooooooooo J20, I always wanted to try that. DD is a fat chubster now, she will sink if I try, and is 7 months now, so better not.

I don't recommend it UCM, she turned purple and is not good with water. took me a years worth of lessons to stop her clinging to my bikini top

Surfermum · 24/08/2007 21:14

I just couldn't bring myself to do it until she was much older .... like 2 or something!

But you see them babies on the telly acting like dolphins. I didn't take DS until he was about 9 months and he loved it. In fact, after reading this thread I have promised to take him swimming tomorrow morning. He will start swimming lessons soon as we live on the beach literally.

He loves the water, though, and is not afraid to just jump in the deep end, but he can't swim. Luckily I have DHs brothers to haul him out

j20baby · 24/08/2007 21:21

i know, she was meant to do what them babies do!!

J20 and UCM babies can swim underwater but as with everything else they have to learn. I have a picture of each of my DD's a la cover of Nirvana's Nevermind album, they were less than a year but I can't remember exact how old.

What new borns to (guessing) about 9 month olds have is a dive reflex. i.e. they hold their breath if they go into water (thus enabling people to give birth in water). As far as babies swimming under water, they don't swim without support for more than about 2 seconds at a time and they can't do this immediately as newborns don't have the muscle tone.

I'm so glad I've inspired you to go swimming UCM, I love going with my girls (hence my keeness to get number 3 in the water when she appears).
