Help! Pregnant on the copper coil.. is this possible?

Undecided24 · 19/12/2019 06:52

I had the coil fitted in April 2018. Had no issues with it so far. My last period in November was 2 day’s late, but seemed to be normal although 2 days shorter. My period for this month is now 3 days late. I’ve had sore breasts, nausea and fatigue. I took a test to put my mind to ease which to my shock, came back positive (no faint lines, solid thick blue line). I’m unsure whether to believe this is true. I have taken 2 x Sainsbury’s branded pregnancy tests and 2 x clear blue tests and all have came back with positive and pregnant 2-3.

Has anybody been in this position before? Really unsure how to feel about this. This will be my first pregnancy.

Please help!

Well obviously it is possible if you've had 4 positive tests...

Absa · 19/12/2019 06:58

IUDs are about 99% effective which puts you in the 1% or 1 out of 100 chance of being the person who gets pregnant on it.
Normally the most effective contraception but in this case it looks like it's failed you :(

How are you feeling about it? I would see a doctor ASAP for them to do bloods / remove coil. It may also be worth doing a dated pregnancy test to see if it gives you an idea as to how far along you are so you can start thinking about options.

Icedlatte · 19/12/2019 07:00

It's possible, and I believe you are at increased risk of ectopic pregnancy if you have a coil so please see a Dr sooner rather than later to check everything out.

LilyPinkNoah · 19/12/2019 07:03

Yes a friend of mine fell pregnant with a coil.

I don't quite know the exact details but she's a personal trainer and the coil got dislodged somehow during training the doctors thought - anyway she has a little girl now.

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 19/12/2019 07:04

The coil is also known to move too. My first was apparently providing absolutely no protection when it was removed. I hadnt a clue

Undecided24 · 19/12/2019 07:05

Thanks for your reply @Absa. To be honest it doesn’t feel real. I’m in total shock! I have done a clear blue digital test and this has came back pregnant 2-3. Judging by an online calendar I should be around 4 weeks.

I’ll be calling my doctors this morning to see what the next steps are.

I know no contraception is 100% just wasn’t expecting it with the copper coil Confused

@Undecided24 bless you I can imagine the shock. The most important thing is to get checked out by a doc today, they may well send you to the early pregnancy unit for further checks. Go with the flow today / over the next few days and make sure you take someone with you for support. Then when everything is a bit clearer you can think about things. Like some earlier posted, risk of ectopic is higher so wait and see what the docs say x

hi op , I had a copper coil failure , my GP was able to remove the coil quite easily but did advise it could cause a miscarriage , (It had moved but they don’t know if it was because of the pregnancy or if that caused the pregnancy. ) I was sent for a scan to date the pregnancy which was a week later to find I was 12 weeks , shock on top of shock!! My DC was born healthy and is now 10years old.

loutypips · 19/12/2019 07:25

I've known a couple of people that have had the coil fail. Unfortunately both pregnancies didn't end happily.
There's an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, and having experienced that myself, please get a scan ASAP.

Pinkbonbon · 19/12/2019 07:29

Yes, my ex flatmate got preggers on it. She'd only had sex like twice too. And they found the coil hadn't been shunted out a place or anything so had no idea how it could have happened.

Undecided24 · 19/12/2019 07:53

Thank you all so much for your comments advice and stories.

I am trying to get a doctors appointment for today.

Yes it happened to me. The coil “did it’s job” so to speak and I miscarries. I ended up having it in for 5 years and it never failed again. It was in the right place all along

loutypips · 19/12/2019 23:55

Hope you're okay.

fallfallfall · 19/12/2019 23:58

my third was a failed copper coil.
i had it removed very early on in the pregnancy and the coil came out smoothly.
the remaining weeks were easy and the pregnancy healthy.

SirVixofVixHall · 20/12/2019 00:01

I have heard of women getting pregnant while using an IUD, and yes there is an increased risk of an ectopic so hopefully they will scan you swiftly.

Lou2120 · 20/12/2019 10:50

I'm 30 weeks pregnant and had the copper coil in for 3 years! It was still in the right place and everything! They removed mine. Hope you get on well at the doctors x

Undecided24 · 20/12/2019 14:25

Thanks again ladies for all your replies and experiences.

Just an update - I have an appointment just after Christmas at the EPU to locate the coil and pregnancy.

Chugchugtraintrain · 20/12/2019 14:39

If you have any signs that it might be ectopic you will need to be seen as an emergency, not wait for your appointment after Christmas.

My mum fell pregnant with me while on the coil 😬

LilyPinkNoah · 20/12/2019 16:35

Think you're very patient. There is a risk of ectopic with coil - it happened to my mum and she ended up in hospital - just keep an eye

sue51 · 20/12/2019 16:41

It happened to me 34 years ago.

slipperywhensparticus · 20/12/2019 16:43

Have they told you the warning signs of an ectopic just in case?

BikeRunSki · 20/12/2019 16:46

The wife of a guy I work with, became pg with copper coil fitted a few months ago. Sadly, they lost the baby a 4 months gestation.

Whistle73 · 29/12/2019 14:01

How are things OP?

GnomeDePlume · 29/12/2019 14:06

Yes, DD2 born practically clutching the damn thing. She will be getting married in April.
