Hey! So I found out I am pregnant last week (did 3 clear blue tests).
I have literally just moved to London so not registered with a GP yet, and can't get an appointment until January.

I am trying to work out how many weeks pregnant I am but I simply don't understand the way it works.

The 1st day of my last period was 28/10/19 and I usually have a 35 day cycle. Due date calculators online suggest that I am 7 weeks, but I am worried as that means surely I need to see a GP or midwife soon?

I registered with a midwife but won't hear back for a while I guess, and like I said my GP that I registered with literally said "We don't deal with pregnancies here, call the midwife!"

I can't believe that I feel so alone in this. I just want to see a GP for some reassurance and to truly know how far along I am.

Any advice? should I be worried and going to a GP midwife ASAP? this is my first pregnancy.

thanks so much
Theresa

Congratulations

You don't need to see a gp, you need a midwife. GPs can't do anything. Have you got the details gor the midwife?

PlugUgly1980 · 18/12/2019 21:20

All normal. Arrange to see your midwife in Jan for a booking in session and then she'll arrange your 12 week scan. Any issues with bleeding / pain before then, go to the Early Pregnancy Unit are your local hospital.

GP won't do anything, as they've said. You'll have a booking appointment any time from 8 weeks onward and then a dating scan around 12 weeks. Your due date will be calculated from the date of your last menstrual period until it is replaced by the due date calculated from your scan. Are you new to the country?

Where I live, you self refer to the midwife and the hospital. I left a voicemail with the midwife and she called me back the next day. I think my first appointment was around 10 weeks.

Hopefully you’ll hear something soon.

Congratulations!
You are doing the right things. You do not need to see a GP. Where have you contacted to register with a midwife?
You will get a “booking” appointment with a midwife in the next couple of weeks and a scan when you are around 12 weeks. Everything else is planned from there.

Usually the first MW happens between 8 and 10 weeks, this is called the Booking In appointment and is a form filling exercise where you get lots of leaflets and your pregnancy notes which you keep and take to each appt.

You don't see a GP and no one confirms your pregnancy, if you've had a positive urine test that's it, they're really reliable.

Dates are calculated exactly as the online calculators do, from last menstrual cycle then they're confirmed in the 12 week scan.

This may be useful to know what to expect in terms of tests and appointments www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/nhs-pregnancy-journey/?tabname=im-pregnant

Your booking in apt with the midwives could be anytime between 8-12w. Mine was at 9w.

The letter came about a week or so after i'd done the online self referral. Along with an apt date for the 1st scan scheduled for 13w (Royal Free Hospital, London).

Sounds like you have done exactly what you need to. Call the hospital you've chosen to go with if you're feeling worried about it.

CherriesAndWine · 18/12/2019 21:49

You don't need to see a GP they won't be able to tell you how far along you are any more accurately than the due date calculators you have been using. Ask the receptionist at your local GP for the number to self refer to a midwife. When you phone they will give you a booking appointment and you're 12 weeks scan appointment over the phone.

Wow! what an amazing bunch you are!

Yes I am new to the UK. I am Dutch and only officially moved here with my hubby on 5th Dec.

So sounds like I am worrying over nothing. I contacted the midwife at UCLH yesterday, so I expect I'll hear something soon,

Thanks a million.

Welcome to the country. Compared to many other developed nations we have fewer antenatal appointments and scans, so I would check the link PP provided to see what you can expect.

Pandora71 · 19/12/2019 07:36

The most important thing is that you get your scan before 13 weeks so they can test the baby properly. It’s pretty standard not to see a midwife until 12 weeks.

GPs and midwives don’t “confirm” the pregnancy with a test. The shop tests are accurate enough. The scan is the first confirmation.

The rate of very early miscarriage is very high these days with people being able to test so early. I think this plays in to them not wanting to see you until you are further along.

@Thee90 oh I'm also registered at UCLH! After submitting my self referral, I received 2 letters in the post 2 days later. 1 for my booking appointment and the other for my first scan ☺️
