High levels of protein in urine. Why?

I had 3+ protein in my urine at the midwife appointment today and bloods were sent to the hospital. Blood pressure is also high for my normal range. Rang the hospital this evening for blood results and apparently all fine (although need to wait until tomorrow for urine results). I'm confused now as to why / what is causing the high protein levels - could it be early preeclampsia that hasn't affected my kidney / liver functions yet?

I'm due to see the midwife again on Monday.

Just to note, I'm currently 33 weeks and had preeclampsia in my first pregnancy where my son had to be born via emergency csection at 36 weeks because my placenta was failing.

A diagnosis of pre eclampsia is off the back of high blood pressure and protein in the urine. Once organs are affected you will see changes in bloods and a diagnosis of end organ dysfunction.

You have pre eclampsia. That is why you have protein on your urine. You are at high risk of PET again due to previous history

@Mummyme87 thank you for replying. So it's possible that my organs aren't being affected yet due to the blood tests being ok? I guess they just keep an eye on me for now.

Well your kidneys are being affected hence why you are putting out protein, but if your creatinine is normal then they are coping.
If liver function is normal then your liver is okay for now. Look out for epigastric pain (upper right quadrant)

@Mummyme87 great thank you for the info. I know my midwife said she will take more bloods on Monday to check whether levels (not sure of what) are rising or not. Hopefully the symptoms hang off until after Christmas 🤞🏻

Op, check the current guidelines for monitoring during pre eclampsia. The APEC website should have links to them. I don't have them to hand right now but certainly the PRECOG guidelines used to have strict protocols about monitoring and admission based on certain symptoms. I think high BP and 3+protein should trigger an earlier monitoring than Monday.

When I had it in my 2nd pregnancy I was monitored every other day firstly at home by the midwife and then on the labour ward, from 33 weeks until delivery.

If you develop any other symptoms headache, visual disturbances, epigastric pain then please seek help immediately.

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras thanks very much, I've just taken a look at the guidelines now.

I haven't had any other symptoms just yet regarding headaches (although had a slight one on and off, but gone away with paracetamol), visual disturbances etc. I had bad wind pains all day on Monday but nothing since (midwife said to keep an eye if it comes back).

My diastolic BP rate has hovered around 85 so just below the threshold on the guidelines. The guidelines say anything 90+ and with protein 2+ require hospital admission - currently I only have the high protein, although my diastolic blood pressure has peaked above 90 once, a few days ago.

I would give your day assessment unit a call as they usually follow up anything like this
