I had a GTT done last week and the 2 hour result was 9.8, but because I was given Bethamethasome in between, they thought it had messed up the result, so went back yesterday and my results were 8.4. I have been told to attend the Diabetic clinic, and I will be shown how to test my blood 4 times a day, but what should I be doing??

Oh Sparkly!

Does this mean you'll be injecting insulin? Or will you be diet controlled?

Go out an eat crap till the clinic, I think a few days won't hurt.

Hi sparklygothkat,
Normally you would be advised to eat a "healthy" diet, (plenty of fruit and veg, high fibre, low fat and sugar). A small amount of sugar in the diet is acceptable for most people, it's the way we should all be eating really. Good luck for your appointment.

Is that 2 hour result before having the sticky drink or after?

Tinkjon · 26/08/2007 22:24

Sorry to hear about that, Sparkly. The most important thing you need to do is eat low GI foods - a quick Google will bring you up a list if you're not already familiar. Fruit, whilst of course healthy, should be limited to a certain extent - small portions, spread out is fine, but no huge drinks of fruit juice or massive fruit salads. You may well have to avoid sugar I'm afraid But the gestational diabetes nearly always disappears after the birth, so hopefully it shouldn't be for too long. Good luck!

I initally had to monitor myself for a month and keep to a healthy diet. If you can maintain a healthy blood sugar reading then you won't need insulin. I couldn't control it so had to inject. sometimes the injections hurt but the majoity of the time it was painless. They will probably not let you get past 39 weeks gestation, and will induce you early. I had good experiences with inductions and I hope it will be the same for you.

HTH

I have never carried to term, 31,33 and 35 weeks, as I have a blood clotting disorder (which has only recently been discovered) and am injecting daily to thin my blood, so am getting used injections now.

(Actually, the most painful part was cutting out cakes and sweets) LOL
