Big baby experiences, growth scan at 35 weeks - anyone's turn out completely wrong

I'm just wondering other people's experiences. I had a growth scan at 35 weeks last week and baby measured 6lb 11 already. 94th percentile for abdomen and 96th for head! I feel like I'm going to have a 11lb baby now Shock anyone else have high measurements and NOT have a jumbo baby

I'll add I'm having an elcs so I don't have to push him out. But am wondering whether it's even worth me packing newborn clothes 😂

I had two predicted big babies. 9.9 fitted into newborn clothes - 10.6 we had to pop into Mothercare on the way home!

HelenaJustina · 17/12/2019 18:51

Due to a concern about growth I ended up being scanned 24 hrs before the vaginal birth of one of my DC. They estimated the weight as over 1lb heavier than actual birth weight. There is hope!

NotSoThinLizzy · 17/12/2019 18:54

I wouldnt bother with newborn size. Mabye upto one month? When I had DS he was only 8lb 2oz and was too long for newborn.

BetweenTheMoon · 17/12/2019 19:00

First was expected to be 8lb ish. She was 10lb 2. Second expected to be bigger, regular scans etc. He was 9lb 2 and we had to go get some newborn clothes as only had up to 1 month! I'd get a couple of newborn. A set of new born vests the the rest up to one month. You can always get more if needed.

Estimating weight is notoriously unreliable.

My DD was on maybe the 90th centile in scans so I expected her to be big and to be honest, she was, she was very long as me and her dad are very tall. She weighted 8lb15 when she was born, but the birth was fine and I needed a few stitches but nothing major and nothing traumatising.
Since she was born she's always been off the scale height centile wise and on the 75th for weight.
So even if your baby turns out to be very big you will hopefully be fine anyway :) don't let it panic you

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 17/12/2019 19:03

Dc2 had a head measuring 42 weeks at 37 weeks according to her scan. When she was born two weeks later, her predicted birth weight was spot on as was her head size.

As long as your newborn clothes aren't M&S it should be okay. My 7 Ib 15oz barely fit into their newborn stuff.

Londonmummy66 · 17/12/2019 19:05

I don't think they can actually tell how much the baby weighs, just how long it is? That was the case with mine. I was told she was 9lb+ and that they'd leave it another couple of weeks so I was envisaging an 11pounder. She came a week later and was only 7lb but 99th centile for length
Having said that both of mine were really long so the only time either of them wore newborn clothes was to come home in. I'd take one set of new born and one set of 0-3 with you and cover all bases.

Teddyreddy · 17/12/2019 19:09

I had a scan at 36 weeks which measured DS at over the 99th centile, they estimated him to already be 8 lb 7 oz. He was born 2 weeks later only weighing 8 lb 6 oz, which was about the 75th centile - so the scan wasn't particularly accurate in my case.

He lost quite a bit of weight initially (down to 7lb 4 oz) and we did end up using newborn clothes for the first 4 weeks or so.

Goostacean · 17/12/2019 19:14

I just had a 10.6lb baby, no indication at all that he was going to be big- until he got stuck at the end of my VBAC! So can’t comment on growth scans, and obviously you’ve made your choice re ELCS, but he’s in up to 1 month inner grows (just) and is nicely filling out his older sibling’s 0-3m clothing. I anticipate we’ll be in 3m+ by 6 weeks, so wouldn’t buy newborn sizes tbh!

Weathergirl1 · 17/12/2019 19:15

I was about to say what a PP said - as long as it's not M&S newborn, you should be fine. The sizing between different brands seems to be worse than women's clothing 🤯

Justasconfusedwithnumber2 · 18/12/2019 11:03

Thanks all, I'm packing my bag now so I have a range of sizes. Let's hope he's not a complete whopper!

You can always cut the toes out of sleep suits! I did this to a few favourites I wasn’t quite ready to bin.

BertrandRussell · 18/12/2019 11:55

Oh, and if you’re planning to bf, big babies often lose a bit more weight post birth and are a bit slower to gain it back. So if everything else is fine, hold your nerve!

Bigpizzalover · 18/12/2019 11:56

My first they estimated to be around 8lb and they was 5lb 13oz

Second they estimated around 6 and half pounds and they was 8lb 11oz

stripes416 · 18/12/2019 12:06

I had a growth scan and was told the baby was on the 90th percentile. I was given the choice to have an induction when I ended up going over my due date but she ended up coming on her own anyway. She was under 9lbs so not big really

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/12/2019 12:09

I was predicted a 9 pounder at my 36 week scan which is huge considering my ethnic background. In actuality I got a really long, skinny, just about 7 pounder. Even newborn clothes struggle to fit!
