I am currently in 32nd week of first pregnancy and one of my wisdom teeth has been hurting a lot.
The gum around it appears swollen a bit.
Has anyone else faced this. Is it common.
I am also taking iron and calcium supplement btw and drinking a glass of milk two times a day.
But the pain in and around my tooth is horrible

no idea but sounds like a trip to the dentist is in order! (It should be free for you with the maternity exemption certificate)

Get yourself to the dentist for sure, it’s free when you are pregnant.

I have no end of issues with a wisdom tooth in my last pregnancy. Apparently hormones mess up your teeth/gums! Mine turned out to be an infected abscess under the gum, kinda trapped between the emerging tooth.. they burst it which was agony but then immediate relief. I then had to take antibiotics for a couple weeks & salt water rinses. The pain subsided on the whole but they agreed to take my tooth out after having baby as it just wasn’t coming up correctly..

Don’t leave it, an untreated infection could cause issues or you to become really poorly. Always better to get checked & treated, particularly when pregnant!

Bol87, but isn't antibiotics a no no during pregnancy

Go find out what they can do to help
If concerned check with your gp or midwife before taking anything

Sounds like you've got pericoronitis, which is inflammation of the gum overlying your wisdom tooth due to impacted food/calculus

Its normally manageable without antibiotics, just needs a really good clean under the gum.

You can still have antibtioics in pregnancy if you do need them though, I would avoid certain types but not others.

Pregnancy can make you more susceptible to gum inflammation, any exisiting inflammation is magnified so people tend to get very inflamed gums that bleed a lot. It doesn't do anything to your teeth (unless you are sick a lot)

Go see the dentist asap

I had this at 39 weeks in a heat wave - not fun!

I saw the dentist who told me I had an infection in the gum area around my wisdom tooth (caused by a tiny bit of food getting stuck) and gave me some medicine that it was safe to take while pregnant.

After a few days it all went away and I was fine.

Go and see your dentist I'd suggest. Feel better soon. Thanks

Forgot to add my baby was born healthy and happy at 41 weeks.

I had this with my first pregnancy. Emergency dentist cleaned all around it with water jets which was sore and i was very sceptical, but after an hour the pain had all gone. It was absolutely amazing.

I’ve had two sets of antibiotics this pregnancy & about 6 sets sets last pregnancy- all is/was well.

In my first pregnancy, I got repeated cystitis & needed antibiotics every time. Plus the infected gums. Baby was born at 40+6.. 8lbs. Now healthy toddler.

This pregnancy, I’ve had cystitis issues again 😩 baby is fine.

They’ll only give you basic ones - amoxicillan. There are lots & lots of different antibiotics and potentially some are a no go in pregnancy. But some are totally fine.. don’t use Dr Google! A real bug bear of mine!

Here is a leaflet from the NHS:

Very easy to follow advice. An infection left untreated can cause serious issues including sepsis. You are particularly vulnerable in pregnancy. If an infection spreads, there is more of a risk to baby than taking antibiotics. A medical professional should check you & advise on the safest route forwards.

My first baby had antibiotics, the strongest anti-sickness meds available, heartburn meds, codeine & copious amounts of paracetamol thrown at her.. it was a rough ride. But she’s all good. Born happy & healthy and a happy, bright toddler! Don’t stress!
