Just wanted to see if anyone has had this happen to them and their experience.

I know the chance of this ending successfully are slim but would be really interested if anyone was ever given a reason as to why this happened.

No infection, and all scans looked completely normal. =(

Xx

I'm really sorry this has happened to you. I've just recently gone through this. My waters broke at 18 weeks, a month ago. I was put on antibiotics and stayed in the hospital for a week before they sent me home but unfortunately I went into labour the day I went home and gave birth to my little girl at 19 weeks. Absolutely perfectly formed but just too soon for this world.

From what the consultant said it seems as though most people go into labour within a week of waters breaking and if you don't then the risks of infection are quite high. If you manage to hold on and not go into the labour but the tear in the sac doesn't reseal, then without the fluid, the baby will have problems forming their lungs.

Very tough outcomes and apparently only 1% of pprom cases go on to deliver at viability. But I tried to look at it as the cases of pprom happening at all is very rare so why couldn't I be in that 1% too! Unfortunately that's not how it worked out for me but you just never know.

I had a follow up with consultant today and I too had no signs of infection in my swab and placenta was healthy too, she said it's possible that my pprom was still the result of an infection that just wasn't picked up in the swab if it was too early days. Also, I have a mild partial septate uterus which can also be responsible for late miscarriage so I've decided to have that investigated. Essentially I was told that I was just very unfortunate which is hard to take but also thankful that there doesn't seem to be anything physically wrong with me so I've been given the go ahead to try again.

Hope it all works out for you and you have a good support network around you

Nanmumandmidwife · 16/12/2019 17:56

@Honey1989 I am so sorry. It is evident that you understand that the outlook for your little one is very bleak. This is something that happens sometimes with no obvious explanation. Perhaps some sort of infection which doesn't show up on swabs and which you n=have no way to know about or have treated. Just awful chance.
It is extremely important that you report any sign that you are becoming unwell.
Sending love xx

I'm so so sorry, I can't offer any words of wisdom or advice, but my thoughts will be with you x

Hi, I've not sure if anyone will still look at this thread but I've only just come across this as I find myself in the same situation. I've had an horrendous pregnancy with hyperemesis and just as it was starting to improve abit, My waters broke 14weeks +3. It's been 8 days now since, I had an US yesterday, absolutely no water around the little baba Sad looked all squashed and could hardly make out the baby. I had some hope that somehow my waters would have miraculously replenished as I've read some stories about it happening. I had a group b strep infection and I think that's what caused the pprom. Hospital did not confirm this but it's my theory. What happened with your pregnancy?? Was baby ok?

Goldenmother · 21/05/2020 11:16

Sorry to hear this has happen to you when I was 18 weeks I was told my waters had broken I was told all the horror storys and I was sent home while I was at home I contacted the support group called little heartbeats they gave me all the advise I needed and information please get in touch with them they have a Facebook page, when I went back to hospital 2 days later for a scan I was told my waters had not broken I'm now 36 weeks. But please contact the little heat beats there is so much more positive feedback from people who have been through this please stay positive as long as your baby is fighting then you keep fighting

DyingfromHG · 21/05/2020 17:01

Goldenmother, aww I'm so glad everything has worked out well with you! mine was confirmed by speculum test and then the ultra sound. Thank you, I have already been on the little heartbeats website, reading the stories give me some hope but some of the stories about infections and losing your uterus scares the life out of me!! I had a fever when my waters broke and have been on antibiotics ever since but they finish today so I'm really scared as I'm prone to catching infections.

Goldenmother · 21/05/2020 17:11

@DyingfromHG I also had the swan test thing which confirmed my waters broke but I was told by my consultant that it should not be used at 18 weeks as it's not accurate so if it not meant to be used at 18 weeks surely shouldn't be used at 15 weeks mine came back positive, and when I had a scan they said I didn't have as much fluid as they would like this was on a Sunday given antibiotics for infection and they kept me in as they wanted me to be seen by the fetal medicine people on Monday when Monday came they couldn't get me a scan so I was sent home came back on the Wednesday had a normal scan then went back to the ward I had been on to discuss the scan and I was told oh we don't think your waters have broken.
When I was told they had broken and all the terrible sorry they don't me to not continue with pregnancy but I spoke to little heartbeats and I made my choice I would carry on as I couldn't live with the what if, little heartbeats will tell your rights they told me how many weeks a baby can go in the womb with out fluid they was so healpfuk and so many positive outcomes then what the hospital will ever tell you.

Goldenmother · 21/05/2020 17:15

There is also a Facebook page called PROMS with lots of positive story's and things people did I remember reading one woman put herself on complete bed rest and drank a gallon of water a day and her hole in the sack resealed another thing people believe has helped is drinking coconut milk I tried this but it's vile my opinion join the page for tips advice.

Honey1989 · 21/05/2020 23:33

@DyingfromHG this was my original post! I had zero fluid and was advised to terminate. I decided to see what happened and carried for nearly 15 weeks. Went into labour at 29 weeks after the start of infection. I never rescaled and unfortunately our little boy only lived for a few hours.
If this happened again we would have done the same as there are positive stories out there. It just wasn’t the case for us. Feel free to message if you have any questions x

@DyingfromHG it’s a different scenario as my waters broke at 25 weeks...I am 32 now and baby seems to be hanging in there

You don’t need me me to discuss viability odds with you as I’m sure you’re very clued up on that now! I just wanted to say you’re not alone and I’m proof the odds CAN be beaten! 80% of women who have PROM goes into spontaneous labour within a week so if you get past that milestone you may, like me, have a shot! And then as you said it’s preventing an infection!

Did they give you steroid injections?

MrsRose2018 · 22/05/2020 07:21

OP I am so so sorry btw, that’s absolutely devastating! The infection is the most terrifying and heartbreaking part isn’t it 💕

My heart breaks for you xx

DyingfromHG · 22/05/2020 13:07

Thank you ladies for all your responses, cant tell you how much I appreciate it!! Smile I cant even begin to explain how alone I've felt in all this. Me and the DH do discuss it but he has a far more relaxed look on things and drs never really want to discuss anything apart from how bad the prognosis is. Everything I've learnt so far has been from my own research.
@Honey1989 I'm so so sorry to hear about your loss!!! After all that hope and getting so far! My heart truly breaks for you!!
This is my worst fear, I have been trying to be positive but last night I watched a YouTube vid from a couple who ppromed at 16 weeks, it was all going so well, they managed to get to 26 weeks but due to the lack of fluids baby had so many problems when born, they talked about how the baby had to have all these holes put into the chest for the lungs and how the baby looked to be in pain, after hearing that I just dont know if I can put my baby through all that if it manages to make it. All the success stories still involved so many operations the poor little thing has to go through, just thinking about it and the bleakness of it all, I just dont know if it's worth doing. I can't handle seeing it all. My last scan I could hardly make out the baby, it was so squashed without the water I felt like I was harming my tiny little baby by carrying on! Sad
@MrsRose2018 no, I haven't had any steroids, it's way too early for that.. I think from what I've read they only offer that from 23/24 weeks onwards.

My bleeding and leaks stopped after around 4 days, but this morning I've woke up to more bleeding, its watered down bleeding.. I know I'm suppose to ring the hospital but I'm putting it off and sitting at home hoping it means nothing.

DyingfromHG · 22/05/2020 13:13

It's funny because normally I would've panicked but now bleeding seems normal to me!

Ladies I came across a really good pprom website, I think it was on one of these threads, www.inkan.se it has ALOT of pprom stories, its categorised too from what week the pprom happened and was really good to read and I would definitely recommend having a look.

@Honey1989 could you please tell me what your experience was during. Did you have constant bleeding or leaking? Did you ever manage to get your waters up?

DyingfromHG · 22/05/2020 13:17

@MrsRose2018
I'm so happy to hear everything is going well for you. I will be praying for you!
@Goldenmother thank you so much

Honey1989 · 22/05/2020 13:17

You are not alone in this. It happens a lot more than you realise and things can work out! I had to work out whether I would always regret not trying in case the leak resealed or things just worked out.
Take this time to speak to a maternal fetal medicine who can be honest with you but support whatever decision you make.
My initial scans the baby looked really squished but they actually improved as he grew even though there was no fluid. I was able to go on complete bed rest and didn’t feel unwell or in pain which I think helped me continue.
I suffered really bad sickness from 7 weeks and had started cyclizine 3 days before my waters broke. Still wondering whether all the sickness contributed or his other problems x

OP posts:
Honey1989 · 22/05/2020 13:22

I had leaking everyday which in a way was good as the baby continues to make fluid everyday so I knew they were still trying and hoping, I’m later scans we could see bladder and tummy was full and was managing to swallow some fluid. But I never resealed and you can’t build fluid up unless that happens. I drank lots of water, not too build fluid as it doesn’t work like that but to stay healthy and infection free for as long as possible.
I never bled but read that can be normal and to keep an eye on it.

DyingfromHG · 22/05/2020 13:31

@honey1989 I have also been thinking the same. It's so difficult, I dont want to live in regret everytime I hear a positive story and die from guilt for giving up.
I am also still suffering from my hyperemesis, I'm currently on cyclizine and ondansetron which I have to take continuously to be able to manage my sickness, I have had numerous hospital admissions due to the sickness and severe dehydration. I also wonder if the drugs caused any harm to the baby. With my first DS I refused to take any meds for the sickness as I'm super paranoid of it harming the baby, I almost died due to the sickness but somehow managed it but this pregnancy DH convinced me I had to put myself first and take the meds and once I was admitted to hospital I wasnt given much choice as it was all administered via the iv. After that I decided I might aswell start taking it

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 22/05/2020 13:35

My waters broke early at 34 weeks and 31 weeks. At the time they couldn't give a reason why.

The 3rd time I was 18 weeks and it was obvious it was down to incompetent cervix. My waters were bulging through my cervix. The next day my consultant attempted a preventative stitch at 6cm dialayed but it failed the next day and then my waters broke. Baby was born at 20 weeks

They say once the waters break and are no longer putting pressure on the cervix it can close quite quickly

DyingfromHG · 22/05/2020 13:41

If I did go into labour now does anyone know if my DH would be allowed in with me? This difficult journey has been even harder due to the fact I had to go through it without him

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 22/05/2020 13:50

An emergency stitch even! I had a preventative one in my next pg at 14 weeks which worked

Ppromfirstpregnancy · 21/03/2021 08:49

Hi all, I know this is an old thread but my waters broke last week at 18+1 and I have no amniotic fluid left. Doctors are not advising to terminate as its my choice but fully aware of the possible bleak outcomes if I do manage to continue the pregnancy. Experiencing light but frequent bleeding/leaking and her little heart is still going strong. Just when we think nature has decided, the US finds a heartbeat. Its such a headf$#k.
@Honey1989 I have the same fears you had - ie all fo the possible future complications etc. I don't want to pry but can I ask how your situation progressed?
Seriously confused on what to do - termination does not seem fair while my little trooper continues to fight and have a heartbeat but I really don't want to prolong the situation of it will leave her with permanent lifelong damage or is causing her any current distress.
Praying for some answers xxx

Muststopeating · 21/03/2021 19:52

@Ppromfirstpregnancy I am so sorry you are going through this, it must be terrifying.

I'm afraid I can't offer you any experience but it might be worth starting your own thread, since your question may have got lost here.

Failing that this will give you a bump!

I hope you and baby are holding on. Will be thinking of you.
