Posting on behalf of my friend who just found out she is pregnant at roughly 8 wks...

Hi, I just found out I am pregnant in a huge but happy shock! I am so excited to be a mum but I cant get over a fear of the damage I may have already done to my baby.

From what I now know was week 6-7 I had just been laid off and was drinking roughly 12 drinks a day... for the whole week. I heard this is when the babies face is developing and can get FAS. I am terrified and feel so stupid.

I havent had a drink since what would have been about 7 wks, apart from one glass of wine.

Looking for similar stories reassurance.

I don't think it effects the baby until the placenta takes over around week 10 as the baby is currently surviving thanks to the yolk sack. Many women have done the same and baby has been fine xx

I think it’ll be fine. Many people don’t know they are pregnant until later on and have done a lot worse. Takes a while for the face to form. I wouldn’t stress about it.

Ahhhh sorry op I didn’t mean to post “no” I was reading your thread then my DD (16 weeks) started crying so I must have posted by accident.
The best thing your friend can do is speak to the midwife... no amount of alcohol they can say is safe or not.

With my first I didn’t find out till I was about 9
Weeks, I’d been on my honeymoon pregnant and gone all inclusive and drank ALOT as you can imagine.
He’s a bright bubbly 4 year old now!

If she mentions to her midwife they can keep an eye out for any indicators during scans but I honestly think she will be okAy

In all likelihood you will be fine. FASD is still uncommon even among people who drink heavily throughout their pregnancies. Be careful from now on but so early on it's almost definitely fine.

Why would she drink that glass of wine, AFTER realising she was pregnant? Nothing she can do now anyway.

teenagetantrums · 16/12/2019 17:09

Will hopefully be fine l drank lots and did some recreational drugs when l was pregnant with my first. I had 3negative tests although l thought l might be pregnant. Wasn't till 12weeks that l got a positive. My son was fine.

She means she drank solid for a week, had one in week 7 and found out about week 8.

Thank you all for your replies. She is so upset she is considering terminating the bany

Why would you want to terminate your pregnancy after being concerned about having a drink?
Book an early scan if she's that concerned, terminating the baby isn't going to make her feel any better at all.

LouTTC · 17/12/2019 00:32

Because she had so many drinks during a key development stage shes worried the damage is done and FAS cannot be picked up on a scan

Didn't think there was as much as a risk until the placenta is formed then it passes through? Baby is still embro stage during the first few weeks, it's after 6 the heart starts to beat and then fetus develops quite quickly. She won't have fetal alcohol syndrome, as some has said this is something where the woman drinks quite heavily throughout the pregnancy.

I rarely drink but drank a few glasses for DC birthday and had a hot tub unaware (think I found out when I was 6 weeks). My DM drank guiness shakes with me to keep up iron levels apparently! And I was all ok.

If she's concerned her best bet is to see her gp.

How is your friend? What did she decide to do? Saved the pregnancy?
