Maternity Clothes

Hi all, I’m pregnant for the first time and wondering about maternity clothes.
Do you buy your “normal” size but in maternity?
How much did you buy?
Where does good/nice stuff?
I’m only 11 weeks so have a little while to go but have been looking on websites and am completely lost!

Yup, normal sizes (or in some I've found a size down, especially trousers) and how much is up to you. I normally wear my clothes baggy so most tops still fit (currently 29 weeks) but bought a couple of pairs of maternity jeans and a pair of maternity leggings for long journeys/relaxing at home.

T0rt0ise · 15/12/2019 21:03

In terms of where, my jeans are from next and JoJo mama bebe and leggings are from Love Leggings. My mum also bought me a top from JoJo.

Brill, thank you

I found that H&M do a good range of maternity clothes, pretty cheap too

Spagbol88 · 15/12/2019 22:00

Asos do good maternity things. I bought 2 pairs of leggings from newlook and 2 pairs of jeans from asos. The rest were just baggy tops or stretchy tops or dresses. Definitely glad I didn't go overboard. Oh and got some larger tights too

I’ve found a lot of stores don’t stock maternity in the shop anymore and most sell online
only.

I’ve bought most of my from topshop. I’ve bought two pairs of maternity jeans and a few T-shirt’s. Then I’ve tried to buy tops which are loose fitting that will look nice after the birth as they are meant to be baggy or from the normal range but sized ip. I have bought as little maternity stuff as possible as firstly I’ve not found much I liked and secondly did want to spend a lot of clothes that I’d get looted wear out of.

As for size in maternity I got my usual size .

ForeverBubblegum · 16/12/2019 09:15

Wait and see how big your bump gets. I didn't show much with my first (second a different story), so I didn't buy anything that was maternity. Just went up a couple of sizes in regular trousers, and enough of my regular tops still fitted.

Xyzzzzz · 16/12/2019 09:17

I wore my normal clothes but got a couple of larger t shirts from primark and then bought leggings, dresses, leggings and jeans from H&M.

Pilot12 · 16/12/2019 09:24

In theory you buy the size you are pre pregnancy but I had to go up two sizes in tops because my boobs got so big! Don't rush out to buy things until you start needing to get them.

When I had my first baby I rushed out early on and bought things then they didn't actually fit when the time came. I also bought far too much, I had two babies and I still have BNWT stuff in my wardrobe. I didn't start wearing maternity clothes until 22w so didn't get much wear out of them either.

If you plan to breastfeed, clothes with a nursing function in the top will last you after your pregnancy too.

Bubblysqueak · 16/12/2019 09:35

I bought mine from eBay.

Thoughtlessinengland · 16/12/2019 09:41

Yup. Am usually a size 12 so bought lots of size 12 maternity stuff of my favourite brands from eBay at a bargain as I definitely wanted to look good throughout. Currently 35 weeks and the clothes all still fit. I have gained a total of 9 kilos by 35 weeks and have a super prominent bump

snowybean · 16/12/2019 09:59

I've bought two pairs of maternity jeans with the stretchy band that covers my stomach, but that's all. I'm 34 weeks now and I still wear my regular leggings, t-shirts and jumpers.

That said, I did start buying clothes in a medium when I normally wear a small, just to give me room to grow. I wore my high waisted skinny jeans until I was around 4/5 months! Gosh, I miss those jeans. Not long to go now though :) The only thing I'm struggling with now is being able to do up my winter coat, but a well placed scarf means it's not that bad at all, even when it's 2 degrees outside

katmarie · 16/12/2019 10:11

I actually got a lot of maternity clothes on ebay, it's worth a look. They are worn for such a short time that you can pick up some good quality stuff in good condition, i found lots of new look, jojo maman, red herring, asos stuff. I just couldn't bring myself to spend a lot of money on stuff I wasnt going to wear for very long.

krp14 · 16/12/2019 19:02

ASOS have an amazing range, literally have everything. I’ve got a few things from boohoo too as don’t see the point spending loads. I’ve managed to already grow out of my first lot of maternity clothes and I’m only 26 weeks 🙈 initially I bought my usual size so an 8 and
It all felt massive but now I’m going for 10s in hope they last till the end

Chrispy88 · 16/12/2019 20:51

Boohoo is really good for maternity stuff! Not expensive either and they have sales a lot of the time. Other than that I just live in large primark stuff because I resent spending loads of money on clothes I won’t use for long.

CrazyKitkatLady · 16/12/2019 21:18

This is all really helpful, thanks everyone

Buy your normal size in my experience.
I bought:
Jeans from mothercare (under bump)
A couple of vests as well as a few vests and tops all from new look
A nice top shop dress as a bit of a treat
Black figure hugging knee length skirt from new look (over the bump)
An occasion dress as I attended a wedding
And that's it! (Obviously there's underwear too but I kinda feel that's a whole other thread)

I made non-maternity tops work for me even when I had a big bump by tying them with a hair band above my bump (and to the side) and wearing with my skirt. Showed off bump nicely and obviously meant more wardrobe choice.

I also had a few baggy bits and pieces which fitted for quite a way into the pregnancy too.

I'd also recommend some flip flops for summer as trying to do up sandals with a big bump in the way is no joke!

Good luck Smile

GrumpyHoonMain · 16/12/2019 21:35

Wait until you get into your 3rd trimester before buying. I personally didn’t really need a huge maternity range as my bump was fairly neat and high - so I wore my normal clothes (especially dresses). The one thing I did invest in was nursing wear - and that has really helped as DC is constantly feeding. So if you are planning to bf then maybe get a few nice loose button down dresses or tops in your third trimester to cope.

spottedbadger · 16/12/2019 21:37

Normal size in maternity or a size or two bigger ‘normal’ clothes, loose fitting - smock dresses are great. I spent a lot of money on maternity clothes on Asos and sent most of it back. The few I kept I don’t really wear. Love my H&M maternity clothes though, they weren’t expensive and look nice. Wouldn’t buy too much - couple pairs of Jeans/trousers, few tops, couple dresses. Oh and leggings!! Maternity leggings are the best Grin Bra extenders from Argos have been a life safer too.

theworldhasgonecrazy1 · 16/12/2019 21:39

I bought all my maternity clothes from ASOS. Had a few things from boohoo but personally I think the general quality of their stuff is quite poor.

Agree with PP don't bother buying too much just a few comfy leggings/jeans, big tops and maybe a few nice things if you'll be going out

theworldhasgonecrazy1 · 16/12/2019 21:40

Also I put on loads of weight so had to go up a few sizes but hopefully won't happen to you!
