Is 25th centile Very small? Confused

Have had reduced movement so been in for monitoring and had to have a scan. When they did baby’s measurements they plotted him on the growth curve and said that he’s 25th centile and so measuring a bit small but within normal ranges.
It was mentioned again today that he’s 25th so a bit small and it’s made me worry - I’m only little but DH is tall - but I’m guessing that they would have kept us in etc if there were any problems?

25th centile means that if there were a random sample of 100 babies of the same gestation as yours, 24 would be smaller and 74 would be bigger.
Your baby is smaller than the average but well within normal limits.
As a stand-alone measurement it is unlikely to be worrying, especially if you are on the shorter side. It would be more of an issue if baby had been 75th centile, for example, and dropped to 25th.
I hope that helps! Try not to worry, they would do more investigations if they were concerned.

25 centile means that out of 100 babies 25 will be smaller than yours and remaining 74 larger. So not particularly small I'd say. My 2 year old DD is in bottom quarter and I'm 5 foot 3 so not particularly unexpected and it really doesn't matter.

It just means that 75% of babies will be bigger, I wouldn’t worry. Were you fairly small when you were born too? My son was six pounds when he was born, so lower than average, but perfectly healthy. Babies can grow in spurts rather than at a steady rate, so you may find his growth goes up.

I wouldn’t worry at all-my son was born on 4th centile and no problems with delivery or his health at all. Also, measuring in utero is notoriously inaccurate.

I was a small baby six pounds at full term. And this is the first time they’ve plotted the growth of the baby from a scan - all the rest have been bump measurements.

Thank you, that makes it a bit clearer.
I was just worried when they kept mentioning small size.

Sounds absolutely fine, babies are classed as SGA, small for gestational age if under 10th percentile then checked IUGR risk factors. How many weeks are you? Sometimes babies have growth spurts even in the womb and can appear small one week then on track again a few weeks later. I wouldn't worry unless your midwife refers you for a growth scan at some point and even then that is just to check that the placenta is doing it's job effectively and that baby is growing well.

Bellasblankexpression · 15/12/2019 19:56

36 weeks. I got referred for a growth scan but because bump was measuring slightly over 🤷🏼‍♀️ But they didn’t give me one as it wasn’t over enough.
The scan was requested for the reduced movements.

My baby was on the 17th centile, then 8th, and is now 5.1. The doctor I saw last week was concerned that my placenta wasn't working as well as it should be, and I was told to prepare for delivery at 33 +4 weeks. I went in for my appointment (and possible delivery) and spoke to the consultant, who you can request to talk to, and after another scan and more monitoring they just decided I simply have a small baby. All the Doppler readings were fine and baby is small but feisty (kick, kick, PUNCH). I do need to go into the hospital twice a week from now on for more CTG monitoring, but I'll happily take that.

If your baby is on a steady 25th percentile trajectory then there's nothing to worry about. I completely understand why you're worried though, I felt the same way!

My DGS was on the 1st percentile last year and was just 6lbs at 40+5 and is considered SGA (small for gestational age).

As this was unexpected, he had bloods taken when born to check for any unknown conditions & DD is having extra growth scans at the moment.

My DGS although a little dinky dot, is perfectly healthy, despite being small.

It's interesting to learn at her last appointment, that as I had IUGR with DD & she was born prematurely, she's at a higher risk of having the same x
