Private Midwifes

go
After multiple phone calls to get my midwife appointment before I’m 12 weeks, then waiting over an hour in very cold reception room and knowing that every time i would get a different midwife, I’m considering of looking into private midwifes.
It’s our first baby and just haven’t felt like there is enough support, without internet and forums feels like I wouldn’t know anything. Feels like it will give me piece of mind what is good for the baby. Anyone else have had one or looking into one?

@vvit if you can afford it I would. I'm 37+3 with my first and completely fed up with the antenatal care I've received. So many hours wasted sitting in waiting rooms, seeing different midwives (I'm on my third), feeling like my choices are being judged and ignored and generally just had enough. I've got to the point where I'm considering not having another, if this is what to expect in the future. We can't afford an IM but if we had the money in the bank I would 100% do it.

I would have too, if I could afford it. I had a homebirth and having the continuity of care was important to me. It worked out well in the end but I was nervous about someone turning up who I didn't know from Adam during my labour.

The care in my area is fairly good, I wouldn’t pay for maternity care unless my pregnancy was high risk & I though things weren’t going as needed.

My first pregnancy, I had the same antenatal midwife for every appointment. She was lovely & helpful & listened & gave me reems of printed information as well as from her. She was never judgemental & supported my decisions. I knew she wouldn’t be on the labour ward as she was antenatal only but when I was in labour, I really couldn’t have cared less who my midwife was so long as they were kind & knew what they were doing! I had two fantastic midwives (my labour went over two shifts) for my labour. Literally could not sing their praises enough, the first came to find me on the ward at the start of her next shift to say hello and see baby Smile

Second pregnancy and I’ve again always seen the same midwife at appointments. She’s really funny & has been incredibly supportive & helpful with me having Hyperemesis!

Why not wait to see if you feel happy with your care? You sound like it’s early days so might be worth not being so judgemental until you have reason to be?

As you say, there’s loadsa factual info online about pregnancy & labour. And hundreds of books you could read. I got some from my local library.. do you need to pay a private midwife to tell you the same thing? And you’ll be given a maternity unit photo number to call with the NHS, they are there to answer any questions.. I rang them loads first time.

As for the waiting room.. if it’s any consolation, my waiting room is red hot & not at all pleasant while pregnant. Give me a cold one any day!

If money is no object then great, go for it. But if it’ll leave you tight, just hang fire & see..
