So I previously posted about having cramping and spotting, and upon going to the hospital they found blood and protein in my urine. I was awaiting results today which I had to call to find out about. I was told that the results appeared normal.
To be honest i'm not so convinced and I feel I will have to make another trip to the hospital. If it's serious I haven't got the time to wait for a GP or midwife.
Maybe i'm just being crazy but how is spotting normal for 26 weeks pregnant?Confused I've been having some aches here and there near my ribs, but if this was a urine infection it would of been detected.. I have a low lying placenta, i'm worried this may be the cause.
I'm just not comfortable and pretty confused, if any reassurance could be offered I would be happy but I will get in contact with triage soon because it's just not adding up..

Any worries that you have, triage should be who you ask for advice. Or at least your midwife. It's very possible for a low-lying placenta to cause bleeding, which I'm sure they've told you. But your health care providers should know more than we do...

greenismyfave · 13/12/2019 17:01

@physicskate I will do. Just seems there not being very helpful at all which isn't nice, it's concerning.

Stupiddriver1 · 13/12/2019 17:11

Something like 70% of UTIs are missed by conventional nhs testing. It’s time people were treated on symptoms not results. Sadly national guidelines don’t support this though research/campaigning is being done on the subject. I’d say it’s likely you have a uti.....whether or not you can convince them for antibiotics is another story.

greenismyfave · 13/12/2019 17:17

@Stupiddriver1 that's a possibility I've been thinking of myself. I've got all the symptoms apart from burning. I'm going to go and check it out but it's as if they aren't being vigilant enough which isn't okay. You can't send a pregnant lady away with bleeding saying it's normal lol nothing normal about that!

Stupiddriver1 · 13/12/2019 17:20

Have they taken a catheter sample because that will answer if the blood is from your urine or from the vagina/low lying placenta?

Stupiddriver1 · 13/12/2019 17:21

And you often don’t get burning symptoms in pregnancy with a uti.

Twittlebee · 13/12/2019 17:26

This is exactly how both my pre term labours started, I'm not sure what I can advice really apart from maybe seeing if they think this could be what's happening for you? Both times I bled and spotted for 5 days with cramps for 5 days before my waters went. My consultant has said it's just how I labour, this time theyll be ensuring I get steroids in me as soon as I start bleeding and cramping this time.

greenismyfave · 13/12/2019 17:35

@Stupiddriver1 nope just two pot samples. It was to my beliefs that they would be using this to also determine where the bleeding was coming from. My consultant (because I had preeclampsia with my daughter) said that they need to see whether it is directly from my womb or urine.
So if it isn't from my urine then second best guess is from my womb. Having a low lying placenta could be the cause but I honestly ain't trying to take risks. I've been told to just call my GP or midwife when I called to get the results but i'm not comfortable with leaving it this long.

@Twittlebee I hope everything went okay with it being preterm labour for you. God forbid but you have to think of all the possibilities and this is one on the cards. I'm about to go into hospital/triage so I will see how it goes.

Thanks all for concern!

Stupiddriver1 · 13/12/2019 17:50

Well they need to do a catheter sample......otherwise how can they tell where the blood is from?

greenismyfave · 13/12/2019 17:56

@Stupiddriver1 you see why I've been concerned feeling as if they aren't doing what they're meant to? It's ridiculous! I'm not a doctor they are, i'm meant to be able to put my trust in them.. Especially when my pregnancy is pretty high risk as it stands.

Thank you for the feedback. Certainly don't feel like i'm crazy anymore.

I totally get your concerns but if you do have a raging UTI the last thing docs would want to do is insert a catheter to take a urine sample as it can push the infection further up your urethra and cause kidney infection and subsequent kidney injury if that’s the case! It is often that a spot test can detect infection markers such as protein/blood but when the sample is sent away it doesn’t grow any organisms which is why you’d have got a ‘normal’ result because there’s not any antibiotics that would solve it because there’s not really any real bugs there for it to fight. I would just call triage and voice your concerns again xx

greenismyfave · 13/12/2019 19:58

@Kkgg10 yeah that's totally understandable, makes sense and I've not really heard of that but they haven't mentioned anything to me about a UTI yet. If i'm totally honest i'm not sure it's anything to do with my urine at all. At triage but you know how the waiting game goes lol thanks for the response x

Stupiddriver1 · 13/12/2019 20:00

I do get that a catheter could potentially cause a UTI to flare a bit worse but at least then you’d have a diagnosis and antibiotics so could treat it.

And with the complication of a low lying placenta I’d say from a risk/benefit point of view it’s worth that slight risk to ensure that you have an accurate picture of what’s going on.

Kkgg10 · 13/12/2019 20:04

A UTI can be deadly if it spreads to the kidney and causes acute kidney injury resulting in dehydration, sepsis and possible damage to the child - a catheter is an extreme option and avoided as much as possible unless a clinical need such as urinary retention.

Hope you get it sorted out ASAP OP. You must be worried sick xx

Stupiddriver1 · 13/12/2019 20:09

An untreated UTI can indeed be potentially dangerous. Which is possibly where the OP is now.

A diagnosed, treated UTI is not going to be an issue.

physicskate · 13/12/2019 22:30

But the catheter result could be negative and the use of a catheter could then go on to cause a uti (when there wasn't one before). I was catheterised during labour temporarily and it caused a massive uti that lasted (and was treated) for weeks.

Stupiddriver1 · 13/12/2019 22:43

But then she’d know that the bleeding is coming from the low lying placenta. Which is important to know. It makes her higher risk for an APH and care could be planned accordingly.

And if a uti was a result it could be treated. Though the majority of catheter insertions do not result in a uti.
