My first midwife appointment is on 15/01 so i will be around 10 weeks.
I thought it would be in hospital but they said the midwife would meet me in a children’s center?!!!!!

What is the first appointment like? No blood test or scan? Just talk ?

Very confused....

Filling out papaerwork, asking questions about you and the dad (health, any dv concerns). Check carbon monoxide levels, check height and weight, maybe check blood pressure. I think I did get blood drawn and I got vitamin prescription.

Yes, just a lot of questions and form filling. At mine they weigh you as well and you give a urine sample.

With DC1 it took about 1hr and quarter. With DC2 it was 2.5 hours so be prepared!

At a children's centre is normal. Like pps have said, lots of form filling really and medical history. Weight, height, BMI, if you'll be low risk or high risk.

Most children's centres have little consultation rooms for midwife appts, vaccinations etc. You'll be attending many appointments there with your DC!

Our booking appointments (might vary by area we have no contact with a gp first) it’s a big long form basically all of your medical stuff and your partners and a blood test. Then you get a load of leaflets and your handheld notes. Scan is 12weeks or slightly after going by your dates. They’ll be able to answer any questions etc while you’re there, were only sent to be scanned at 12 and 20weeks unless you need growth scans later on.

Yeah it's a bit of an anticlimax I'm afraid, I was so excited and it's really dull!

Bol87 · 12/12/2019 11:31

It’s very dull. It’s just a reallllly long form they have to fill in, loadsa questions about you, dad & family health. They’ll do a carbon monoxide test on you (bit like a breathalyser), take bloods & check your urine. And do your height & weight. They’ll book you in for your 12 week scan. And that’s it. My first booking appointment was at my doctors but this pregnancy, it’s moved to an outpatient clinic.

Midwives are trained to take bloods, you don’t need to go to a hospital for it. In fact, you visit the hospital very infrequently in pregnancy. If you are low risk, you go for 2x scans and that’s all. None of your midwife appointments will be in a hospital. The next time you go is for labour.

It varies mine was in the community midwives room at our hospital. It's maternity services are gone now other than scans and community.

They ask questions, they weigh you. Check your wee. Ask where you are thinking of having the baby. Then I think you will receive a bounty pack with what will be your notes ☺️ x
