Chances of PPROM & preterm labour happening a 3rd time

Hello,

Has anyone else had PPROM and preterm more than once? Any way to know what causes it and ways to prevent it?

My last two babies have been born early due to PPROM; most recent at 28 weeks (he died).

I've my consultant appointment tomorrow but I am nervous that I wont get any reassurances or support as after my 1st son I was told that it was likely a one-off occurrence and wont happen again!

I would really appreciate help with formulating questions as I just keep going round in circles in my head.

Thank you in advance

I'm so sorry to hear that Thanks

Not exactly the same thing but my first DC was born a bit early at 34 weeks due to PPROM and now I'm almost 36 weeks with pregnancy #2. I was convinced that it would happen again as there was no reason at all for it the first time but so far it's been fine. Sometimes it can just be random but with your history they should be trying to find out the cause.

Thank you for replying.

I have switched hospitals for this pregnancy & birth so hopefully this consultant will be more willing to investigate. The previous hospital just keeps saying that they dont know why it happened but it was always destined that my son was going to die (despite him being born completely healthy bar sepsis)

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your son xxx

Have they considered a cervical stitch (cerclage)?

Twittlebee · 11/12/2019 13:43

@ballyboy i do not know yet, it is something I can ask tomorrow - this will be my first consultant appointment this pregnancy

With this pregnancy they did monitor my cervical length many times after 20 weeks, did they check yours at all? I would push for that too and yes cervical stitch if they suspect that short cervix is to blame. Mine wasn't short at all so I'm still none the wiser but I have a feeling it was due to some infection which could have weakened the membranes.

Maybe ask them to check if you're group b strep positive too?

Twittlebee · 11/12/2019 14:49

I'll be certain to ask about that @pinkstar01 thank you. I've been wondering about Group B Strep because both DSs were born with sepsis (after long labours) so I wonder if it was GBS that caused the sepsis

Wishing you all the best Thanks

Yes, 30, 21 and 14 weeks. The first are now 15 and 10, We lost the last at 17 weeks.

My husband has had a vasectomy now, there’s only so much a person can go through isn’t there.

If you’re considering a cerclage then push for a Trans Abdominal Cerclage and have it done before you try and get pregnant again.

Twittlebee · 11/12/2019 14:59

I am sorry for your loss @BentNeckLady - did they ever know why it happened?

Yes I’ve got an incompetent cervix due to repeated lletz procedures.

Thank you. And you too. It’s a horrible thing to go through :(

Hi, I know this thread is old, but I just wondered if your pregnancy all went ok? I had two PPROMS (36 and 30 weeks) and I think I am pregnant again so wondering if the cerclage worked? I am so sorry for both your losses.

TwittleBee · 14/11/2022 19:31

Hey, no, I never ended up having a cerlage as my cervix was reasonably long (always above 2cm).

My waters went at 24 weeks and I gave birth at 28 weeks as sepsis kicked in. Thankfully baby boy came home after a couple months in NICU.

They did find out what was causing it the whole time though... THRUSH!

This time they tested my placenta post birth and discovered it riddled in thrush and my son also had sepsis caused by thrush. They wouldn't have ever worked out it was thrush causing the sepsis if it wasn't for the placenta being tested.

My Dr spoke to me afterwards and explained how thrush can cause irritable uterus if left untreated. I me er bothered treating it in any of my pregnancies as, although it kept coming up on swabs, it wasn't ever bothering me.

So, do keep on top of thrush if you're anything like me I guess.

Best of luck @sofiaboojie

@Twittlebee thanks so much for your reply. Firstly congrats! I’m so happy he made it. How’s he doing now?

wow that’s interesting. I’ll have to keep an eye on that as I’ve suffered with thrush in the past. After my second pproms they did find an infection in my placenta but they couldn’t pinpoint if that had caused it, they thought more likely an Incolpetent cervix due to Lletz had caused both PPROMS. So I think I will get a cerclage this time. I’m really nervous. Didn’t plan this pregnancy and just hope I can keep my waters as long as possible. Again thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it ❤️
