Hi

I am almost 5 weeks pregnant and i wonder if it’s ok for me to have decaff coffee and tea everyday?

I used to drink two to three coffees daily until i started ttc over a month ago...

But i keep drinking the decaff stuff.

Anyone else been in that situation? Can it really cause miscarriage?

Why would it be a problem? It's the caffeine you are meant to avoid. So decaffeinated means it's fine.

I read that even decaff had small amounts of caffeine...
Some online articles says better to refrain from having caffeine altogether so wondering what is everyone else doing ??

It's the misogynistic NHS that writes this rubbish.

You can have normal coffee if you want it

I thought the NHS advises no more than 1 normal coffee or 2 teas a day, and you should be fine if the amount of caffeine you take is within these limits? I believe some other books will even tell you that more than this would be OK, tho I've been going by the NHS guidelines.

No more than 200mg of caffeine a day

Sunshinegirl82 · 09/12/2019 21:22

I had 2 or 3 cups of normal tea a day throughout both my pregnancies, no drama. I probably wouldn't drink litres of Red Bull but I think the odd tea of coffee is fine.

LH1987 · 09/12/2019 21:23

The NHS says 200mg of caffeine is okay, that’s about two cups of instant using one spoon of coffee.

I’m at the same point as you OP, I’m using the Tommy’s caffeine calculator, so far seems ok - have you tried it? www.tommys.org/pregnancy-information/im-pregnant/nutrition-pregnancy/check-your-caffeine-intake-pregnancy?poll_result=155

I’m not a coffee girl but I severe Diet Coke fanatic! Was trying to wean myself off in the lead up to my BFP and now my day is usually:

  • decaf herbal tea before I leave for work
  • decaf regular tea when I get to the office
  • can of Diet Coke at lunch (I live for it!)
  • one glass of decaf Diet Coke in the evening
  • chamomile tea before bed

Obvs with shedloads of water but I figure that’s only one caffeinated drink a day so can’t be a problem...

You can definitely not overdose on decaf tea and coffee, as they have minimal amounts of caffeine.

I would advise to drink only decaf which has been decaffinated using the Swiss water method. It just means fewer chemicals were used in the process.

I've been allowing myself up to 200 mg a day if needed.

I might have a cup of coffee or a can of Coke a day and that's about it. I think that's ok and sticks to the guidelines.

I drank a caffeinated mug of coffee and a caffeinated mug of tea a day in the first trimester. 😳 When I got into the second I bought some decaf and I have decaff coffee in morn and caffeinated tea in afternoon. I guilted myself into buying decaff

Lizzieee2727 · 10/12/2019 08:09

As the others have said, the amount of caffeine in decaf is tiny. You could drink buckets of the stuff and still be nowhere near the guidelines set. I used to drink so much tea and coffee but deliberately cut down while we were trying and then went down to one caffeinated got drink in the mornings. I then found that actually my taste buds changed and I couldn't tolerate my normal coffee but Taylors decaf or Douwe Egberts were tasty enough.

Ok thanks everyone for your answers! That’s also what i thought that I’d he safe with my decaff :)
