Early private scan tomorrow - what can I expect?

Have it booked with Ultrasount Direct. I'll be 7+6 tomorrow and have booked it to ease my mind as I have anxiety problems and have been having spotting and bad cramps from 4 weeks so just want to make sure it's definitely in there and there's heartbeat.

What can I expect?

I had one at 7+1, great experience. Saw a little jelly bean with a flickering heartbeat. They tried abdominally but couldn't see enough and changed to internal scan which was so clear!

Hope all goes well for you Smile

If you don’t mind me jumping on here to ask a question of @supersimplesnogs what does internal actually mean? Is it like a smear test type implement? I’m 5weeks and considering booking one but not sure about what internal entails and if it’s painful or uncomfortable.

Spanglebangle · 09/12/2019 15:07

They will live up an internal probe, kind of like a dildo, gently insert it and move it around slowly until they locate the pregnancy. I have never felt it be physically uncomfortable. It is an odd feeling having someone do that to you for a medical exam though. Just remember they do it all the time so it's not odd for them.

Spanglebangle · 09/12/2019 15:08

Lube not live!

SuperSimpleSnogs · 09/12/2019 15:23

Yeah it's like a smooth oblong probe (about a foot long but they went to great lengths to tell me that only the first inch or two goes in! I found it way less intrusive than a smear, no discomfort and they were very reassuring

erised · 09/12/2019 15:47

At nearly 8 weeks, will they need to do an internal scan?

Probably, but they might try an abdominal scan first. If so you'll need a full bladder

Delbelleber · 09/12/2019 16:01

I had an early scan the normal method, saw a little berry with a heart beat at 7ish weeks

reluctantlondoner · 09/12/2019 19:36

@erised yes it will most likely need to be internal

SuperSimpleSnogs · 09/12/2019 20:06

They always try abdominal first so go with a full bladder...if they need to do an internal you'll be asked to go to the loo, as the bladder obstructs the view!

Sunshinegirl82 · 09/12/2019 20:28

I'd definitely go prepared for it to be an internal scan. Also don't expect to see anything too baby like, both my scans at 7 weeks really only showed a baked bean with a heartbeat!

I did find it reassuring that everything was in the right place and progressing as expected at that point.

DCIRozHuntley · 09/12/2019 20:33

I've had scans at 6+3 and 7+1 with my last two babies and haven't needed an internal scan. I went with a full bladder.

Both times I was told there was a heartbeat and shown it on the screen but I didn't know what I was looking at Confused

I had a scan at 8+5 with DC2 and it was so much clearer and more like a "baby scan"; what a difference a fortnight makes.

MaisieMolly · 12/12/2019 07:57

How did it go @erised ?

erised · 12/12/2019 10:40

Not great as I turned up to a completely empty office. They had mixed my booking up and didn't actually work Tuesdays. I think I'm just going to wait until my first NHS scan now as I'm almost 9 weeks anyway.

Shock what a massive disappointment for you!

MaisieMolly · 12/12/2019 11:39

How infuriating!!!

reluctantlondoner · 12/12/2019 13:18

Oh no! Good luck for the wait and I think there's often a lot to be said for just waiting until 12 week scan... xx
