Any tips for easing sciatica pain whilst pregnant?

I had a bit of sciatic pain towards the end of my first pregnancy, but I'm only 24 weeks through my second pregnancy and it's already really hurting me. I can't walk without a limo at the moment as the pain goes from the top of my leg into my bum cheek and it's so so sore when I walk or sit or lay down for too long.

Does anyone have any advice for how to ease this?

Thank you

Hope you dont mind but I will be following this thread as i am in agony with it! I am 29 weeks and had it for a week now. I have been signed off work for two weeks and all the doctor could say was rest and paracetamol.
Some days i find walking around makes it a bit easier to bear and i have got a bump support belt in case its the weight of my bump thats causing it.

With your first did it just go after giving birth? X

I didn't think about going to the doctors, but I'll go this week. It's the worst, isn't it? I'm feeling so exhausted of being so achey and moaning all the time. My job means I'm on my feet all day which is making it worse.

It went straight after the birth last time, quickly forgotten about :)

Foam roller? Deep massage? Tens?

Wishing56 · 08/12/2019 18:04

@winterplease i got to the stage where the pain was literally making me feel sick so went to GP. He didnt say much but gave me a prescription for Codeine which i only take when the pain is excruciating.

I cant wait to give birth now just to get away from this sciatica!

@thinkingcapon i am going to try a foam roller tomorrow. I had a massage yesterday and unfortunately hasnt helped.
GP said to me that a TENS wouldnt help as it is muscular?

How strong a massage?! Elbow in bum cheek crying massage?!
Rolling on a tin of tuna?!

I've not had it whilst pregnant as I'm only 14 weeks now but back at Easter this year I was almost crippled with it. I was in a host of painkillers (obviously not possible when pregnant) but I also saw a chiropractor, had physio, had acupuncture and also reflexology. They really helped, probably the chiro was the most effective though. When I could walk and sit properly again I joined a Pilates group and have been going regularly ever since. I haven't had any pain since then! Pilates is just brilliant for building up core strength and adjusting your posture. I will continue to go as long as possible through my pregnancy. Not sure if any of these things appeal to you or are within your budget but wanted to share my tips with you anyway.

Good luck, I hope you get some relief soon x

If you Google sciatica exercises there's some amazing stretches will really ease it. Hard to explain but if you watch videos. Also lie on a tennis ball under your bum, it kills but really helps release it! I only know this from an osteopath pre pregnancy but they saved me when I did my back in.

There are some yoga moves that might help. Do you have any pregnancy yoga classes locally?

Yestermost · 08/12/2019 19:35

Pregnancy yoga and acupuncture saved me!

I've found keeping moving will help. However painful! I use a pillow to sleep with at night and put a pillow under knees and elevate legs supported. I've also tried some of these exercises a few of which have eased pain for a little while.. www.healthline.com/health/pregnancy/sciatica-pain-stretches

Sounds like piriformis syndrome. I had it last pregnancy from 16 weeks and again this time. I'm coping better this time as I was expecting it. It's an awful pain though.

My doctor got me weekly physio and that did help ease it a little. Ultimately it was only giving birth that shifted it!

I hope you get some relief and feel better soon!
