Baby Clothes in Hospital Bag

Hi!

I've had my baby's hospital bag packed for a few weeks but I'm fretting that I've not put the right clothes in there. My baby is due in January in the UK so it will be pretty cold, can anyone give a rough guide as to what baby will need to wear? Also sizes, should I take newborn and 0-3?

I took a few bits in tiny baby, a few bits in newborn and a few bits in 0-3m as you never really do know.

I had a summer baby so what particular things you'll need - I'm not the best to ask! Vests, sleep suits and hats I should reckon.

My DD was 6lb4 on her due date and even preemie clothes were a bit big. I had packed 0-3 thinking how tiny they looked but they just swamped her! All you need is vests, sleep suits (the ones with fold over mitten things on the end) a hat and blankets. Everything else can be bought later and it's not advised to have puffy thick things on in a car seat anyways x

My DS is an October baby but either way you'll need a vest, sleepsuit and a hat, and then a blanket or 2 to put over the straps on there car seat. As they car wear puffy coats/snowsuits in the car!
I'd take new born and first size, DS was 8lb 11oz and very long and he still fit into newborn just fine for a couple of weeks maybe a month. 0-3 buried him

Sorry not preemie I meant first size

Passthecake30 · 06/12/2019 22:30

My 2 both wore "up to one month" as their first size. Vests and babygrows will be fine for in hospital. Plus a snowsuit and hat for coming home in.

MyDcAreMarvel · 06/12/2019 22:32

Pack first size and up to one month, not 0-3 they are huge!

MindfulBear · 06/12/2019 22:33

Don't bother with 0-3. Unless all babies on your families have been giants. Take newborn size with you. If baby is tiny then dad / granny / best mate can grab you some tiny baby clothes. If baby is a giant they can grab the 0-3.
Hospitals are hot remember so no need to overdo it whilst there.

  • long sleeve vests - 2 or 3. We loved the H&M kimono ones as they don't need to go over the head. Both our kids hated things going over their heads (& still do 8 & 4 years later!)
  • 4 sleep suits with integral feet .
  • a hat
  • a pram suit for leaving the hospital in and a car seat.
  • newborn nappies - 1 pack.
  • water wipes
  • baby blanket from home

Hope that helps!

You should get a cocoon baby for the carseat. Save you having to get a coat or snowsuit. I have had 2 winter babies and swear by them!

MindfulBear · 06/12/2019 22:37

Btw you can get non puffy pram suit / snow suit for wearing over a sleep suit that is suitable for going outside in whilst in a car seat. It's a bit cold to put them in a car seat without a bit more.

Our car seat (maxi cosi) had a sleeping bag that could be added. It seemed nice n snug but my babies were tiny so I really fretted about them being able to breathe so never did it all the way up in case they slipped down a bit!!!!

I had a January baby and it was cold. But, the hospitals are super hot! It was all about the layers.

If you are tall, do pack 0-3 as well as newborn.I think we got about a weeks use out of the newborn sizes: I’m 5’8 and babe was just under 9lb. He was to be fair pretty much 91st centile forever so was a massive chunk but still, my experience was opposite of others here!

Vest (either long sleeve or short) with poppers plus a sleep suit with feet was pretty much my go to indoors. Then we had a cardigan, hat and fleecy blanket for outside/ in the car. We had a lot of baby blankets and I really liked them for layering.

owlofathena · 06/12/2019 22:56

My baby is due Christmas Eve, I've packed 3 newborn sleepsuits and short sleeved vests, 1 up the 1 month sleepsuit and vest. A knitted hat and a jersey hat. Then a going home outfit of a slightly thicker sleepsuit, long sleeved vest, socks, cardigan and blanket.

My daughter was a very slim 6lb8 baby who was drowned by newborn clothes and didn't fit into 0-3 months until she was 3 months old. I'm expecting this baby to be a bit bigger so not taking tiny baby clothes with me.

C305 · 06/12/2019 22:59

My little one was 9lb7oz & very long and 0-3m were huge on him! Newborn size was still absolutely fine for him but we used newborn & up to 1 month as it does vary a bit in sizing depending on where you buy! As others have said, hats, vests & sleepsuits with foldable hands... separate mittens are a nightmare!

IaIa3 · 06/12/2019 22:59

Just take 1 0-3 vest if you'll worry without it but honestly it's incredibly rare for even big babies not to fit in newborn (though look at the weight limits as they're not all the same). In hospital they'll want baby in a vest, sleepsuit, hat and then under a blanket (or two) in the cot. As pp have said no snowsuit in the car seat so I put mine in a cardigan. All babies go through different amounts depending on how sicky so since the clothes are so tiny pack as many as you can fit.

MyDcAreMarvel · 06/12/2019 23:00

Make sure the sleep suits have built in scratch mittens.
