Hi ladies can anyone recommend a good breast pump? Ideally electric and not too noisey or too expensive :) just slightly overwhelmed with the amount of options!

How often are you using it / plan to use it?

It's hard to know but would like to be able to express to share the night feeds so reasonably regularly I guess?!

I brought a breast pump without any research just in case I wanted to express the odd bottle. I got an avent one as it was fairly cheep. I'v used it a few times and have pumped a bottle each time from just one side but I do think if you're planning on pumping regularly it may not be right and you may possibly need a 'hospital grade' pump.

I bought the Tommee Tippee Express and go, on the basis that the whole system seemed simple and a good idea. The pouches, which you pump into, the make up part of the bottle instead of pumping into a bottle, ripping into a pouch if needing storing, then back into a bottle when required.
Seemed like a good idea. However, there’s so much plastic wastage as you can’t reuse the pouches, the pump is noisy and I didn’t find it work all that well for me.

I did have a Haakaa (sp?) suction pump and certainly in the early days found that the best and got loads off.

Eventually, at 8 months, when we had failed miserably to give bottles, mainly due to my lack of motivation to pump as it was a faff and seemed like such a waste of time as it’d take longer than actually feed, I bought the Elvie. And my god, what a life changer. It’s fantastic. But bloody expensive. But the ability to pump, silently, whilst I just carry on with normal activities is so worth the cost. I can be pumping and cooking tea, or doing the washing, or just playing with DS. Since buying it DS has had at least one bottle a day which is great as I can now leave him for fairly reasonable lengths of time.

Personally I’d say is 100% worth the money, for ease of us. But it’s a lot of money to find. If you do decide to go for it, look for Boots Points offers, as I got £48 worth of points when I bought it. Plus £5 cash back through Quidco. Plus the resale value is about 85% of its cost.

I have used an Ardo Calypso double pump for pumping twice or once a day at work. I like that it is a closed system unlike the Medela swing and also it's quiet. Think it was in the region of £150 for the full kit with cool bags etc to transport. The hakaa was also great in the early days but not once my supply regulated. But expressing is always a faff! If it wasn't for work I would have avoided it as much as possible.

I also had the Ardo and recommend it as it's a closed pump so the most hygenic and good resell value.

My advice on pumps is to wait until baby is here and breastfeeding is established.

I initially used a hakkaa for less than £10, then a Philips manual pump for approx £20. By then I knew breastfeeding was 100% working and I wasn't introducing formula. I also needed to build some freezer stash for time away from DD so I stumped up £130 for the ardo. I wouldn't have spent £120 if baby was on formula / breastfeeding wasn't going well or if baby didn't take a bottle. So make sure all those things are right before a pricy pump!

I bought an avent one from tesco. You can get single or double, was quite cheap and effective

Serabi · 06/12/2019 22:05

I also think expressing is a faff and only really did it so I could have a very important overnight away and also the odd day to stretch to being 6 hours away from DD. I've never worked out the attraction of spending time to pump / store / sterilise bottles daily so a baby can have as bottle of BM. In the first 6-8 months if I missed a feed for any reason and baby had expressed milk, I'd end up feeling full and needing to pump anyway!

That said - a friend expressed a full bottle every morning and her DP would do the 10pm dream feed so she would sleep from 7-3/4am. So it can work but I'd have been too engorged going from 7-3am at that age and expressing the next morning would have encouraged my body to keep making that milk so catch 22

I used Medela electric swing. It was advised by my midwife. A bit expensive but no complaints at all!!
