How to tell baby's position

Hi ladies,

Can someone help me with how to determine what position my baby is in? I'm 35+4 and I've not yet been told his position, and my last appointment with the midwife she said she couldn't tell. All the movement I feel is right at the top of my bump on the right hand side if that means anything, very rarely feel anything lower than my belly button. I keep trying to feel around with my palm and just can't tell what's what. I hope this makes sense and I don't sound too daft!

Thanks

It can be hard to tell just by palpation of the abdomen, OP. Experienced midwives can get it wrong. But if you’re feeling movement in your upper abdomen, it’s likely that your baby is correctly positioned head down, and its feet are kicking upwards.
When babies are lying in breech position it can be difficult to get your breath, and you can feel like there is a large bowling ball jammed under your diaphragm, as the relatively large bony head digs in much more then softer limbs do.
The position isn’t always fixed by your stage of pregnancy either. Babies can turn right up until they engage. My second DD was breech until after 35 weeks, and I was beginning to think a section was on the cards, when she thankfully turned herself.

@Babdoc thanks for your reply, I was beginning to get abit worried as a few ladies in my antenatal class were saying the other day they can feel babies bums etc under the ribs and I couldn't relate as I just can't tell which bit is which 😂

Sometimes it’s more obvious - DD1 was back to front, so all her limbs were at the front. I could see the outlines of her limbs bulging and moving on my tum, and once I grabbed her heel through my abdominal wall. She snatched it away in a panic, and shuffled round to put her limbs at the back!
I wouldn’t worry too much what the position is at this stage, OP. Just enjoy your final few weeks of peace and sleep, before life as you know it is turned into chaos by the baby!
