Newborn so sweaty at night

Is this normal!? Why don’t people tell you this?! He is going to sleep in a vest, sleep suit and a folded cellular blanket and the sweat is lashing off him. The room is about 20degrees.

20 degrees is the top end of the ideal temperature. If it can be lowered to 18 then ideal. If it can’t then take off the blanket or the sleepsuit and see how it goes

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 29/11/2019 22:33

You need to make the room cooler or leave the blanket off the poor little thing if he’s wearing a vest & sleep suit

Kezmum14 · 29/11/2019 22:35

I didn’t think newborns could sweat. 😬 is definitely be removing layers and trying to get the room temperature down :)

mynameiscalypso · 29/11/2019 22:37

I have a sweaty baby too. It's delightful isn't it? It does sound like you may need less layers though - our room is about 20/21 degrees and we just have a sleep suit and a thin grobag. I'm a bit paranoid about overheating!

lljkk · 29/11/2019 22:38

T'Internet says some newborns just normally sweat profusely during deep sleep (who knew).

doadeer · 29/11/2019 22:39

I think it's also to do with their sleep cycles. It's impossible for me to get my bedroom down to 18 degrees we just have a warm flat and the sun heats it. I have my little boy in a onesie only and I'm conscious of his temp in the night. During the hot summer our bedroom was 30 degrees 😳. I would take away a layer and see how he is....

IceBearRocks · 29/11/2019 22:39

Newborns cant sweat...its probably pee!!!

Xyzzzzz · 29/11/2019 22:39

My baby runs warm too, I don’t put a vest on her. Defo lose a layer.

GrumpyHoonMain · 29/11/2019 22:41

Newborns can and do sweat. And profusely too. Depends on how hairy / fat the little critters are. DN used to sleep in just a nappy from 3 days old and even then would often wake up soaked.

doadeer · 29/11/2019 22:44

They do sweat! My DS'S hair goes mega curly when it gets wet so I can always tell if he has been sweating by his hair

Thanks for all your replies. It’s a big learning curve being a FTM I tell ye. Just when you think you’ve got one thin sussed they throw something else at you Confused Smile

Newborns may not be able to regulate their temperature but they definitely can sweat. Grin

MrsBricks · 30/11/2019 10:16

I would be sweating at 20c overnight too! Lower the temperature to 18 max.

doadeer · 30/11/2019 13:42

What happens to babies in warm counties where it isn't 18 degrees at night? It's impossible to get our flat to 18 degrees unless I installed air con

Bol87 · 30/11/2019 14:15

@doadeer - less layers! Same as babies here in summer. My daughter was born during a heatwave & she went to bed in a short sleeve vest and covered with a muslin. It was 29 degrees in our room some nights 😰 we were all very sweaty.. a real joy after just giving birth!

iusedtoloveopalfruits1 · 30/11/2019 14:37

It’s november and i live in scotland i didn’t think the room being too hot would have been an issue clearly i was mistaken.

Dd2 was born in December. I'm in Scotland I was paranoid about her being cold.
She was a sweaty baby and born with a full head of hair, every morning her hair would be wet.

krp14 · 30/11/2019 15:27

I saw online on the gro website this room temperature and clothing guide for what baby should wear dependent how warm your room is!

gro.co.uk/download/grobag-wear-guide/

Thought it was quite useful and I was surprised how little they recommend they wear tbh!

iusedtoloveopalfruits1 · 30/11/2019 15:55

i just put him down for a wee nap in the living room which is 18 degrees. In a short sleeve vest and sleepsuit no blanket. Which is less than what the gro company suggests and the suit was soaked after half an hour. I’m thinking he’s just a sweaty baby

My son has always got hot when sleeping. Even now at 2 years old he goes to bed with short pj's and a thin duvet which I would be freezing in!
