Hi All

This is my first pregnancy and I’m two months in.

The hubby and I are planning a 2 week holiday at 5 months approx March time, I was wondering how active/ knackered you feel at this stage?

I like a hot beach trip but we do tend to get bored after a few days so want plenty to do. Asia would usually be the choice but really limited with where we can go with Zika virus. We were looking at California, San Fran, Yosemite, Las Vegas but I’m worried that’s a lot of driving around if I’m as tired as I am right now, perhaps better to go for as not as exciting trip with less moving around.

Any advice on how you felt at 5 months would be great and help aid the decision.

Thanks!

I felt fine - wasn't even showing very much. I went abroad at 2 months, 6 months and then again at 8 months (although by this point I was sodding knackered, and being kicked inside out by that point). Go and have a lovely time! Just make sure you have decent travel insurance.

I went to New York, when I was 4mths pregnant.
I didn't know I was pregnant at the time. We had a great time, lots of alcohol was consumed by myself, and walking, shopping etc.
I suppose it depends on how you feel?

I’m currently 6 months and doing the weekly shop feels like running a marathon. I’d honestly have cancelled a Holliday if we’d had one booked. The tiredness is weird and intense you just can’t push through it- that being said it’s not all the time.

Personally I’d feel like I was wasting money to go on holiday like this... but every pregnancy is different.

I’m late 20’s - previously very fit and healthy btw 👍🏻

Mistymeow · 28/11/2019 21:37

I am five months and the tiredness has definitely worn off, although everyone is different. I’ve recently done California- what I would say is you may well get breathless, especially with hiking and particularly the steep roads in San Fran! And there is a lot of driving too. I would love a similar trip but we are going to make do with Tenerife and beaching myself somewhere :)

Thanks all!
I’m previously active but have had to reign it in as the tiredness really has taken over but I heard it wears off after the first trimester 🤞. Think California could be a winner then, just will have to take it easy and maybe not travel to too many places.

I went on holiday to Crete at 6 months pregnant. Thought I'd be fine, but found it a real struggle. Like others have said, walking and breathlessness were a big thing. All I wanted to do was lay out by the pool, where as normally we are off walking and checking out the sights and are much more active. If you do go away, try and plan on a lot of rest time. In hindsight, I wouldn't have bothered going!

I went to New York at 20 weeks pregnant. I had a specific muscular problem which was the side effect of pregnancy and that made walking hard, but apart from that I was very active and we had a great time

I'm nearly 6 months and feel great for the most part. It's probably a great time to go if as generally people are feeling a bit better in themselves at this stage and you're bump is not yet big enough to be really heavy.

The only thing I find is walking too much does cause quite a bit of aching and I'm currently suffering with a muscle problem caused by the pregnancy, dh and I are going on a baby moon soon also I want to get out and about but with lots of rest stops!

ineedanotherholiday · 29/11/2019 03:47

Ps Cali is a really full on holiday by itself, so much to see and do we were shattered- without being pregnant!

Liverbird77 · 29/11/2019 04:03

Everyone is different
I did a huge road trip in the USA at five, almost six months. I was a bit tired at times, but generally fine.
If you're going long haul, I'd recommend Business Class for the comfort.

DuvetCaterpillar · 29/11/2019 04:09

I'm 23 weeks (5-6 month borders) and I'm literally just back off the plane from Australia, and was largely fine. I found I was more sensitive to motion sickness (partly because my nausea/ vomiting has continued into my second trimester anyway) and I needed a chill out afternoon every few days, but every pregnancy is so varied, you won't know what yours is like until you get there.

My symptoms vary day to day, and yours might too -I was horribly sick on the Barrier Reef tour boat, but still got some snorkelling in, did the rainforest tour the next day. I'd book the holiday anyway, and just leave yourself a bit of flex in the schedule in case you have a day where you feel a bit rough. It'll be tougher to go off on big holidays with a baby, after all, so make the most of what you can!

ThePurpleMoose · 29/11/2019 04:35

We went on a city break for a few days when I was between 5-6 months but it was only an hour and a bit on the train. I couldn't imagine a long-haul at that point - I wasn't completely exhausted and sick like the first trimester but was starting to struggle physically. We had a lot of tea breaks and usually went back to the hotel mid-afternoon for a rest before going out for dinner. I think if you take it easy and don't expect to be able to do as much as you would normally, you'll have a nice time.

DameSylvieKrin · 29/11/2019 04:39

At my 20 week scan I was unexpectedly forbidden to fly or to be more than 20 minutes from a hospital. Get insurance that covers everything even if it’s expensive. A long hospital stay with a premature baby can be very expensive.
But still go! Chances are it will be fine.

DuvetCaterpillar · 29/11/2019 07:09

Oh gosh yes, do get good travel insurance that explicitly covers pregnancy and associated complications- wouldn't countenance going without it!

boymum9 · 29/11/2019 09:41

We went to Miami for a week when I was 6 months with first ds, I didn't have easy pregnancies by any means but the holiday was great and would have loved to have gone for longer, just try not pack too much in I suppose!

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 29/11/2019 13:07

I felt really well during second trimester of my first pregnancy. Lots of energy and bump wasn't too big. DH & I did a 10 day trip to Japan over Xmas (5.5 months pregnant) with a fair bit of walking/ sightseeing and I was fine.

On my second pregnancy now and it's twins! A whole different ball game. I managed a trip to see friends in Germany but did very little walking, drove a lot, had a nap most days... So, are you sure there's only one in there?!
