Baby measuring below 10th centile

Have recently had a growth scan which show baby measuring at 6th centile. 29 weeks and he is measuring at 1146g which I thought was pretty normal for this stage but they also said his stomach is measuring small. Has anyone had any experience of this and everything turning out ok ?

Might be totally fine. Statistically, someone has to be on the sixth centile. As long as that is maintained throughout and centiles don't drop I'd have thought it'd be OK. Did they mention interuterine growth restriction? What's the plan moving forward?

Same here, stomach of baby is small. Turns out my placenta isn’t working properly so I’m having a c-section in the next 10 days. I’ll be between 33 and 34 weeks when she arrives 🙈

They are more worried about my placenta than the growth though as me and DP are small anyway, me at only 5ft and DP about 5’5 so we’re both short arses.

Small babies aren’t a concern as long as their healthy try not to worry yourself :)

What follow up has been suggested? There are a number of possible reasons for being small which need to be considered. Most common if baby was on a higher centile at 20 weeks is poor placental function.
It may well be that your little one needs to be born early, but you are already 29 weeks, so baby is not very, very immature, just small.
If you want me to review the scan report do PM me

My dd was measuring on the 3rd centile from 20 weeks onwards. In my case it turned out I had high blood pressure from 30 weeks and pre-eclampsia from 34 weeks so it most likely affected the placenta. At birth she weighed 12 oz, at 37 weeks. She is now 11 and still very slim, 9th centile now, as is her younger sister (maybe genetics played a part too), but absolutely fine and a bundle of energy! I remember being very worried when I was at your stage as there was so much focus on her growth or lack of it. Are you having regular growth scans from this point on? It is good that this has been picked up now as you can be more closely monitored.

Sorry 4lbs 12oz!

My baby measured small from 19 weeks. The centile varied from 5 to 12. Placenta was working fine, I was having some blood pressure spikes but average BP was within norm. She was born on her due date, weighing 3230g and 53cm long so not very small at all. The scan on the day of the birth was out by 400g. She is now 7 months old, still a bit thin but very long.
If the abdomen was the small part though then placental problems are always suspected first. My baby had a small head and a small abdomen. Long femurs though.

Thank you for all your replies! I have been searching myself on the internet and have read that it can be pretty common and that majority of the time baby is perfectly small. Just my anxiety driving me crazy at the moment, I am an anxious person at the best of times.
I have got to go for a CTG monitoring this weekend and again next week then a growth scan do see if anything has changed next week which I have everything tightly crossed that it is 🤞 but it is reassuring to hear your experiences.
@SexlessBoulderBelly how did they notice that the placenta has started to fail? How do you feel about having baby so early?

I was measuring small at my 28week appointment, so went for a growth scan, i had reverse blood flow noted at my local hospital so was sent to the hospital with the maternity ward, had another scan under a consultant who said everything was fine.
Then got referred for another growth scan as again measuring behind at 32 week appointment. That was today and the blood flow through the umbilical cord was high resistance so I was sent up to triage and a doctor told me then it meant my placenta was struggling and I would need a c section within the next 10 days.

I’m scared, nervous, excited, I feel weirdly relaxed about it all. I just want her safe.

@SexlessBoulderBelly oh wow! Sounds like she will be a lot better out then in, just goes to show how amazing doctors etc can be when it comes to cases like this. I hope everyone goes as smooth as possible for you and wish you all the luck!
