hi all,

we have this cot and was intending to try it out with newborn daughter tonight. however I've just read co sleeping isnt advised if you or your partner smoke. I don't but partner unfortunately does have a few cigs throughout the day. does the side sleeping cribs have same rules? so frustrating as it seemed like a great idea as daughter does not settle well in a cot by herself :/ thanks x

Co sleeping is when they are in the same bed. Next to you in a crib/moses basket is fine, have not heard of the smoking thing, hopefully someone else will advise xx

ah okay, the crib attaches to the side of the bed so there isnt a barrier if that makes sense? so its 3 sided, just see such conflicting advice online. midwife was here earlier and suggested we use it - didn't mention anything about if anyone smokes or not, just a very anxious FTM! X

I think your partner needs to stop smoking .
Just having a smoker in the house increases the risk of cot death.
I am an ex smoker, stopped before trying for children.
It's not easy but he can seek advice from the nurse practitioner at your GPs surgery or look on the nhs website.
The sooner he stops the better because it's such a risk to take.

I dont know the proper advise but I had a next to me and me and my partner smoke. We wore an 'outdoor' top when smoking so it wasnt on our clothes and used mouth wash and washed our hands after every cigarette. All was fine. They are in their own space in the next to me. My LO was never in our bed just next to us. Dont worry.

GrumpyHoonMain · 27/11/2019 17:46

It would probably be safer for your newborn not to sleep in the same room as a smoker if she’s 6 pounds or less. When a parent is a smoker it’s actually safer for newborns to sleep in another room - if that’s not possible, put all your sheets in the wash, open windows to air the room out for a few hours, and kick DH out.

BeanBag7 · 27/11/2019 18:46

I would encourage your partner to stop smoking as it is a risk factor for SIDS, even if you're not co sleeping

used mouth wash and washed our hands after every cigarette

That's not enough. Smoke goes everywhere. Nails, hair, clothes.

Your partner needs to stop.
Your baby shouldn't be held by him at all if he had a cigarette and he shouldn't be wearing the same clothes.
Research it a bit more OP and show him what you have found as there is a lot more to it than this.
