Hey ladies,

I'm 31 weeks and now I'm getting restless legs at night which is making it impossible to sleep!

Anyone else had this? Did anything help?

TIA xx

I found wearing socks to bed helped

Rosehip345 · 27/11/2019 00:35

Yes now help!!! Can’t wear socks as it’s too hot but I’ve found having a hot water bottle on them held, again can’t do this tonight as it’s too hot!!

I find that getting up and doing some gentle exercise that stretches my thighs helps (like squats) temporarily. In the longer term I started trying to eat lots of high potassium foods like bananas, orange juice, potatoes and that has massively helped.

Magnesium supplement! I had RL really badly in my first pregnancy, in my second I was taking a magnesium supplement for something else and didn't get it at all.

Magnesium spray on my legs helps with mine but check it's ok to use when pregnant

Insomniacscientist · 27/11/2019 06:34

Magnesium helps as a pp said but you would need to check with a medical professional if this was appropriate for you during pregnancy.
Making sure you are well hydrated helps and some people find having a banana each day helps. I’d recommend it as part of an afternoon snack.

Second getting your magnesium levels checked as they may be low. In the short term, I bought a menthol cream from amazon which made my legs cool and distracted me enough to get to sleep. Decleor do a posh version called circulation booster if you want a treat.

I found eating bananas helped (I think it's the potassium in them that helps) and staying hydrated.

I'm suffering with this chronically! However I read online an old wives trick of putting vapour rub on the back of your legs and bottom of your feet before bed. Done this the past two nights, mixed with a hot water bottle on them and my compression socks and I've slept like a baby! (Or at least how I'm deluded enough to think my baby will sleep lol)

So I suffered like mad with this in my last pregnancy and nothing relieved it unfortunately I use to be in the bath daily with Epsom salt which did help a little but I was still up every night for hours with it.
If your going to use a magnesium supplement please check first if it's safe for pregnancy as their is two types I can't remember which one but one isn't good to use during pregnancy (maybe the oil) but I can't remember which one...
Other thing is upto 28 weeks with this pregnancy I suffered with RLS and arms it was horrible I would cry most nights because I was exhausted then I got my iron levels checked and I'm anaemic.. Since starting my iron tablets it's completely gone I was also on iron tablets with my 1st pregnancy too and never got RLS with that one so it may be worth getting them checked not sure if it's related mind but seems odd that it's literally just gone as soon as I started taking the tablets xx

Em2122 · 27/11/2019 14:16

The only instant relieve from RLS is to orgasm! The release of dopamine eases the restless legs

MerryDeath · 27/11/2019 14:20

prunes! i have been eating loads of prunes, it's the potassium i think. i haven't had a problem for a good few weeks now and i had restless arms too which was hideous.

Alrighteo · 27/11/2019 14:26

I use to be in the bath daily with Epsom SALT (speech and language therapy/therapist) I hope Epsom was a help ....

nataliemum25 · 27/11/2019 14:56

Im 35 weeks now and this has been keeping me awake for weeks as soon as I relax they start, I spoke to midwife yesterday and she took bloods to see if it's to do with iron levels, Sunday night was the worst for me and I never slept at all, my husband stayed awake with me as I was so upset, I bought lavender Dead Sea salt and that seemed to help sooth them, I know what your going through and it's so horrible I hope you find some relief xx
