Hip pain at night

From reading around I think I have sacroiliac (SI) pain which radiates through my hips, bum and upper thigh especially at night time when having to sleep in my side. I have to change sides every 30 mins or so when the pain becomes unbearable. Recently I have also noticed pain in my tailbone when sitting at work and have to get up regularly to stretch and walk around. I've had the night time pain since 15 weeks and am now 20 weeks and it seems to be getting worse.

I plan on speaking to my midwife about it when I next see her and seeing if I can arrange some therapy but not sure what would help most ie. Physio/ osteopath/ chiropractor

Does anyone have any tips for sleeping better at night? I've tried pillows between my legs, have bought a matress topper, tried sleeping in a memory foam wedge pillow. Nothing helps for more than 10 mins.

Get a physio referral asap as they can really help. I had bad hip pain from about 10 weeks due to a pre existing joint condition. It took about 6 weeks to see a physio and then about 6 weeks after seeing them for the exercises they gave me to make a difference but they really have helped. Still wake up regularly to have to switch sides but it's more like every 1 - 2 hours and the pain level is lower (and much lower when I get up on the morning).

I had the same pain all through my pregnancy.
I had physio, it didn’t do much for me. But I have been a nanny for 24+ years and it turns out years of carrying children around on one hip as meant that it is now 1 to 2 inches lower than the other. The physio managed to straighten it out.
And so you know my pain stopped the instant my DD was out.

Thanks for the suggestions. I also have scoliosis so my pelvis is tilted about 2 cm so I think it's just making it worse. Physio in the past for that hasnt really helped so I wondered about trying an osteopath or chiropractor but am not that sure what the difference is. I'm going to see if I can get a referral today.

Is the pillow between your legs all the way from knees to ankles? Can make a difference.

a chiropractor should help..I was having the same (not related to pregnancy) and a few sessions at the chiro has made a huge difference.

I've had the same for weeks now but resigned myself to it for the pregnancy. I've put it down to excess weight gain and having to sleep on my side all the time. Hoping it disappears when baby is here! Only two weeks to go hopefully.

I just want to sympathise. I also have bad lower back pain at night only. I have a previous Sacro-Illiac joint injury so its that flaring up. I have got an NHS physio appointment next week. I had a phone number in my maternity notes where I can actually Self Refer which was a surprise!

Its frustrating, i feel ok during the day.I am only 14 weeks, so a bit concerned how it may escalate.

i hope you get some help xx

Try and find a McTimoney Chiropractor in your area, it's a much more gentle and relaxing approach to Chiropractic. Really recommend and the apps are a full 30 mins so you don't feel rushed x

@Mum2b2020 I wake up in pain every morning. I don't know if I'm sleeping like a dead weight to unconsciously stop myself from rolling into my back/right side
