Hi ladies,

I had an ultrasound scanning last week (10 weeks + 5 days) and everything seems just fine except one issue - The Doctor said that it appears that there is a case of Umbilical hernia.

She told me that there is nothing to worry about and that its a pretty common thing that should be fixed naturally within a couple of weeks.

Are you familiar with this issue? is there really nothing to worry about?! because both me and my partner have been pretty stressed since then.

We are scheduled to have another Ultrasound screening in about a week (12 weeks + 4 days) so I hope to see that things have been sorted out by then, but some words of advice would definitely make me feel better.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

I had this and did a fair amount of research. Turns out every baby (as in 100%) has an umbilical hernia at 11 weeks because the bowels grow faster than the abdominal cavity. You will be rescanned and it will have resolved, nothing to worry about Smile

@Alon789 it will very likely resolve and you would never have known if you hadn't had an early scan. It is one of the reasons that the NHS does first scan around 12 weeks because a few days makes a difference when it is such a large proportion of baby's existence. At 10 weeks often full closure of the abdominal wall hasn't happened.
If there is still the appearance of an umbilical hernia when you have your next scan you should be referred to a fetal medicine consultant to recheck because just occasionally there is an issue which may need surgery soon after birth. If organs such as the liver are outside the body that is completely different.

I was born with an umbilical hernia. I was fine except that I had a huge pot belly with an outie belly button until I was about 3. Then I had surgery to rectify it, presumably to tighten the stomach muscles, and they used stitches to give me an innie belly button.
I've not noticed particular issues save that I was told by a physio that I'd never have strong stomach muscles because of it. I also have idiopathic scoliosis meaning my spine is curved but they dont know what caused it. Stomach muscles help with aligning spine and preventing back pain so it's just a guess but the two could be related.

@T0rt0ise - Thank you so much for the reply! You definitely got us a bit more relaxed here :) This is actually what we have learned as well throughout the online research, but as there are so many sources saying different things, we just didnt knew what to believe.

@Nanmumandmidwife - Indeed, that´s more or less what ive heard from my Doctor as well. As we became pregnant following an IVF treatment, I was, and still am, pretty stressed so I visited the Doctor on week, 5,7 and 10 for an Ultrasound :/ but thanks for your input, guess I will need to wait till my week 12 Ultrasound.

@Mum2b2020 - Thanks a lot, I actually have a friend who had the exact same situation with her toddler and they had to do the surgery when he was 2 years old, he is all well and healthy now :)

Thank you so much and have a great Sunday!
