Has anyone had heavy bleeding in early pregnancy and the baby survived?

On Friday (at 7 + 5) I started bleeding heavily with clots and lumps. After internal exams I was told by the Dr I was having a miscarriage and this was confirmed by the EPU.

Today, I went in for my scan to check whether I needed a D&C and they found a "viable heartbeat" although the fluid sac is rather small.

I have spent the whole weekend coming to terms with a miscarriage and now everything is up in the air again.

I won't know until a further scan on Friday whether the baby is going to survive. AND I AM STILL BLEEDING???

Has anyone experienced this? Please help!

Hi
I am 5 weeks pregnant today (if working out my last period correctly) I have done countless clear blue tests since I found out I was pregnant, for reassurance as my first pregnancy 3 months ago I miss carried.
I started bleeding yesterday and it was quite heavy, I didn’t pass anything clot wise. Was just heavy bleeding. It has basically stopped now and more like spotting and brown discharge, I went to the doctors and they told me that my cervix is closed which is a good sign that the bleeding isn’t coming from there. I have a blood test Tommorow for HCG. I am just worried and I want to know if this has happened to anyone else before and gone on to have a successful pregnancy, I gave up all hope but it has been restored and hoping for the best from now and no more heavy bleeding. I know what a miscarriage is like as I have previously had one before, this is different. Slight pain and was passing blood clots last time and was in agony. I then passed the sack 24hours later. Please I just need reassurance and want to know if anyone’s ever had the same and I aren’t alone in this and everything will be fine. Thankyou xx

I have recently started bleeding, i thought i was over 7 weeks and me and partner went to epu and had ultra sound scan and internal 1. They said they could see sac at bottom but could see pregnancy at the top so they think im earlier than what i thought, ive got another scan on 7th dec to see what is happening, im just worried as my bleeding is still quite heavy and ive noticed clotting, only tiniest amount, has anybody been through this as i need advice, im going out of my mind here

Rachletty · 06/12/2018 06:54

I am also having the same problem I have been bleeding for over a week, however last night was a huge bleed with clots, I had a scan on Tuesday which saw a sac on the right place however no fetus (apparently I am earlier than I thought) have to go.back again on the 14th December and the wait is agonising :(

bmoore1021 · 25/12/2018 04:24

Rachletty, I'm going through something similar right now. However, I haven't been bleeding for a week. Started light bleeding yesterday afternoon which progressed into heavier bleeding with clots and cramps. I've had a MC before, earlier this year so I recognize the symptoms, but they weren't as intense this time, as in bleeding was heavier and cramps more intense last time. Went to ER to have pelvic exam and ultrasound done. They said my cervix was closed and they could see a small sac. I go back on Wednesday to have blood count checked, etc. Just wandering what you found out?

Ccm34 · 12/01/2019 10:09

I started to have brown discharge on Wednesday evening, and since then I’m starting to bleed with clots. I have an appointment on Monday with the gynaecologist, I was having very bad nausea but now it has gone are these the signs of a miscarriage

Thinkofme46 · 19/01/2019 18:43

Hey! Wow, I'm sorry I know this is an old post, but this is exactly what I'm going through, down to the number of weeks gone, the day it's fallen on and the type of bleed it is! It's nice to see so many positive outcomes. I thought that if you experience heavy blood loss, then that's it, game over. I went to a&e today and the doc told me I still had a positive and that bleeding in the first trimester was actually quite common, but I'm still expecting the worst, this is one heavy bleed, so I'd rather be prepared for bad news. I have my first scan in 2 days to check.

Prettyplease202 · 19/01/2019 20:43

Feeling the same. 4 weeks pregnant and have had light spotting with one day of heavy bleeding. Test still positive but I know I could still have lost it. Could I still be pregnant?

Thinkofme46 · 19/01/2019 21:09

Sounds like you are for now! I absolutely recommend checking with your gp though. Good luck!

Prettyplease202 · 19/01/2019 21:37

@Thinkofme46 thanks. It’s just so confusing isn’t it? I’m going to make an appointment on Monday

Ccm34 · 19/01/2019 23:14

I had my early pregnancy clinic on Monday and I didn't get good news, was 11 weeks, make sure you get an appointment with the early pregnancy clinic

Thinkofme46 · 20/01/2019 08:30

It is very confusing. I'm prepared to hear the worst but now I've seen so many stories of ladies who've experienced a heavy flow and gone on to have a successful birth, I have to wonder if there's a chance... I'm not experiencing any abdominal cramps, shoulder pain or dizziness that the doc told me to look out for. I dunno... What will be will be ay

xJune88 · 20/01/2019 09:16

Be prepared for the worst but it can happen. Im currently 24 weeks 3rd pregnancy, 1st baby. Had a loss in Jan and June at 14 weeks and we decided we were done for a year. Did a test, pregnant. Was over the moon but petrified it was going to go wrong. Got to 9+4 and felt a pop and a gush went to the toilet and bright red blood with gigantic clots flooded out of me. I sat on the toilet and cried and cried, hubby went for wine and I sat on the floor of the shower for ages with wine crying my eyes out. Had a scan 2 days later, baby was there measuring perfect with heart beat. This happened again at 12 weeks and 14 with spotting inbetween. Everytime baby was ok. At 12 week scan I was told I had an extra chronic hemmorage attached to sac but it would reabsorb or bleed out. Everything is fine now and I feel so lucky to have my girl inside me wiggling away. Goodluck all xxx

Thinkofme46 · 20/01/2019 10:34

I wish we could like these posts as you can on Facebook. That's another lovely reassuring story xJune88, thank you for sharing! I mean I'm sorry to hear of your losses, but it's also beautiful to hear you've succeeded now, you must be over the moon :) It's my first try after having my implant removed after a long 11 years of using them. Its been a turbulous 5 months reajusting to natural hormones, but frankly it means I'm not surprised if this one pregnancy hasn't made it, just happened fast and my body wasn't quite ready. It occurs to me though, that it's possible that the placenta doesn't secrete as much progesterone as the whats-it... Corpus Luteum? So this really is just a regular menstral bleed. Will see, I'll ask at my appointment tomorrow :)

Vintagemummytobe · 20/01/2019 12:39

Hi ladies,
I’ve been experiencing similar. We had frozen ivf cycle with 1 embryo and am currently 5 weeks 1 day. Weds I started spotting lightly but wasn’t particularly worried at the stage as put it down to implantation bleeding. From Thursday to now the bleeding in becoming increasingly heavier with some clots. We took our 2nd official test yesterday which was still positive but we don’t have our early scan until 5th February. Trying to cling onto hope and wonderful reading the positive results. Xx

Thinkofme46 · 21/01/2019 19:25

Alright folks, this is my last entry for this post. It wasn't good news for me in the end, but I just wanted to reiterate my gratitude to everyone who has shared their inspiring experiences; it's not exactly an easy topic to discuss. The bottom line is to mentally prepare yourself should that bleed happen in early pregnancy. Its not always going to be strong enough to survive, but see your doctor the moment you see spotting and you might (just might) find you go on to have a healthy pregnancy. To whomever reads this, don't lose hope but do be prepared. Remember, you can always try again whenever you're ready. Good luck :)

Vintagemummytobe · 21/01/2019 20:07

I’m sorry to hear your outcome Thinkofme. I too had sad news this morning as took another pregnancy test this morning and it was negative after 5 positive tests . I am thankful for my little boy who we had with our fresh ivf cycle almost 3 years ago,
Good luck all Xx

Hi Ladies,

I'm going through something very similar. On Christmas Morning, we found out we were pregnant - this was our first positive test. We were over the moon excited! We started talking about the nursey and who to tell first and when to tell them. We decided not to tell anyone until I had completed the first trimester. I was 5 weeks when we found out. I'm 6 weeks and 1 day as of today.

Now comes the horrible part, Christmas night I had some spotting (dark brown). My moms a nurse so I knew that this was a sign of "old blood." I figured maybe I had just overdone it on Christmas and that I needed to rest. I laid down but could hardly sleep because I was cramping so much. I finally went to sleep after a few hours of laying there. when I woke up the next morning, I had sex with my husband as I was feeling better. Then I went to the bathroom afterwards and when I wiped the napkin was full of brown blood. I started to panic. I called the emergency on-call doctor at my doctors office. He said I was having a miscarriage and that my having sex had made matters worse. He told me to go to the emergency room.

I called my mom (this is how she found out I was pregnant), and I told her the above. She told me even if I was having a miscarriage that they couldn't do anything about it and that I needed to just try to rest and not to stress. I tried to rest and relax but I basically just cried for several days and mourned for my baby. We want to have a family so bad and this has scared the living hell out of me! I tried to stay calm and relax though as much as I could until the middle of the night Saturday. I woke up in the middle of the night with horrible cramps and heavy bleeding with clots. I called my mom, and she said that I needed to go to the emergency room. She said she was worried that the baby was in my tubes. We went and had a pelvic exam and did ultrasounds. They did blood work which showed my levels as being good. They found the sac and it measured 5 weeks 5 days. They said that the baby was fine as far as they could tell but that they were worried that I was in the process of having a miscarriage. They sent me home with a picture of the sac and told me to see my OBGYN on Monday morning (yesterday). I went yesterday hoping for the best but expecting the worst. They wanted me to take a urine specimen, but when I tried I filled the cup with blood. They did more blood work and did ultrasounds. The sac was still there (by the way I was told during this appointment that my ovaries are sideways - but that wasn't a concern or a cause). So, now he wants me to come back on Thursday for more bloodwork and to see if we can get a heartbeat. He said that we should be able to get one by then.

What does all of this mean? I'm so confused emotionally, and I don't know what to do or how to feel.

Please help!

Engard · 31/12/2019 21:03

I bled at 14 weeks, found out at 20 weeks it's because my placenta was covering the cervix. All good now, 36 weeks.

Engard · 01/01/2020 20:49

I'm so sorry @lotty2013 😞

Court2169 · 20/12/2020 20:14
