Hello, just posting to see if anyone has been through anything similar and what the outcome was... had 20 week scan today all babys organs were fine and doing what they should be, however she is measuring abnormally small, i have to be scanned by a consultant friday and then go from there, was not told much at todays scan as they cant be sure what the problem is, but now im so worried and have no idea what to expect!

How small is she? There may not be a problem at all, some babies are just small. The reason for the review with the consultant is to check if there is any indication that she is small for a particular reason. Reasons can include a problem with the placenta and blood flow to the baby or issues with the baby herself. As I say though, she may just be a diddy one!
Small babies do need extra care taken in respect of birth because they don’t have the same energy resources etc that a well grown baby has.
The consultant will go through this with you.
Wishing you & baby well - do message me if you want to at any time.

How small is abnormally small? Is it IUGR or do they think there is something else behind it? What size was your baby at your 12 week scan? Did you think your dates were out?

Laurenbxx · 19/11/2019 18:23

Thankyou both for your replys, the midwife i saw after the scan did say she suspected IUGR, this is the first time her size as been mentioned. And my dates at my 12 week were what i expected them to be, im hoping shes just a small baby n theres no underlying issue. Shes below the 3rd percentile xx

I dont even know what percentile means tbh xx

That means she is smaller than 97 out of 100 babies at her gestational age, according to statistics.
Hope all is well with you and your wee one

As a previous poster says, a percentile is a comparison and the one they use once they're born too. For height, weight and other measurements. Try to think of it as a line of 100 people, all of the same age. Imagine them ranging in height from really short on the left to really tall on the right. Person number 50 in the line will be pretty much average height and referred to as "on the 50th centile". The third person along from the left will be pretty short and referred to as "on the third centile".

There is no "lowest percentile" really but you may hear phrases like "off the chart" or "crossing centiles" meaning a child or baby is outside of the usual range or has moved position (can be normal for a child born prematurely for example who then gains weight and starts to catch up but likewise, can be of concern if a baby was once average but has moved significantly up or down the percentiles).
