Heartburn :(

31w+4 here and the HEARTBURN is unbearable! I’ve been suffering with bad reflux and heartburn for the past two years nearly (I know I really should see a doctor and I will once baby arrives) but since I’ve been pregnant it has gotten 10x worse, to the point where it’s keeping me up all night, stopping me during the day and I’m having to deep breathe and drink water (which also gives me heartburn...) it’s so so frustrating because no matter how much gaviscon, Rennies or milk I take, nothing at all seems to help!! And any food triggers it, from the obvious culprits like orange, tomato, fried food etc to water, potatoes and any meat etc... Did anyone else have it bad?? Or know anything that helps?:( currently in agony trying to sleep lol xx

I don't have any advice as such but I feel your pain. My heartburn has ramped up massively to the point it makes me nearly throw up. Wakes me up constantly I'm eating Tums as if they are going to go out of fashion. One thing I did read though is too much milk can make it worse so try and cut down on drinking too much of it. You should go see the GP as they be able to prescribe something stronger to help you. X

I had it terribly in pregnancy. See your doctor and ask for Omeprazole . Safe and pregnancy and completely cured - don't suffer for weeks!

MeanMrMustardSeed · 19/11/2019 02:24

Heartburn was the absolute worst thing about all my pregnancies. Keep going!

Jollitwiglet · 19/11/2019 05:39

I was prescribed omeprazole and it really helped

Cjo99 · 19/11/2019 15:12

Never heard of Omeprazole, is it a liquid or tablets?? Currently taking the liquid gaviscon but oh my, it makes me gag a lot lol thanks for everyone’s response! Smile

See the doctor: I suffered horribly in my last pregnancy to the point of it bringing me to tears as I didn’t realise I could take anything stronger. If it happens again I’ll definitely be getting something to help.

Abneyandteal19 · 19/11/2019 15:22

I second Omeprazole- total game changer! Suffered with this through 3 pregnancies and one tablet of Omeprazole a day sorts it right out- you need to get it prescribed but shouldn't have any problem doing so.

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/11/2019 15:26

I was prescribed ranitidine and it helped loads. Don’t suffer OP, ask for the good stuff! Rennie abs gaviscon did nothing for me and before I was on ranitidine it hurt to drink water some days.

stitchwitch85 · 19/11/2019 17:17

I was surviving quite well on ranitidine until it was subject to a recall due to carcinogenic contamination! 😱 now prescribed omeprazole. It makes me feel a bit nauseous of a morning sometimes but, my god, it is fantastic to be free from heartburn!!

Call the GP, OP, get it prescribed. The heartburn was one of the most horrible things I’ve had in pregnancy and it's wonderful to be free of it.

Thriftykenny · 19/11/2019 20:42

Omeprazole is amazing! I was being sick multiple times a day due to acid reflux and after day one of taking omeprazole it was completely gone!

Annie1109 · 20/11/2019 23:33

I don't want to scare anyone but please, please be careful with omeprazole!! Yes it works amazingly well in sorting heartburn symptoms out but the long term damage it can cause is awful.
I was on it for 2 years as I have a hiatal hernia and really it stopped the heartburn like nothing else - until other issues started, I suddenly started having regular stomach pain that would lead to extreme vomiting and diarrhoea - turned out I'd become intolerant to gluten and dairy. Stomach acid is produced for a reason and unfortunately when medication like omeprazole stops that acid from being produced completely, it can create as many problems as it solves ☹️

PixieDustt · 21/11/2019 02:47

Oh heartburn is up there with some things in pregnancy 😬!

I had it throughout pretty much my whole pregnancy give or take a few weeks and it was awful. I was so stubborn and didn't take anything for it. Looking back I really should've!

Old wives tale say that heartburn means there is a lot of hair. My DS was born with a thick blonde head of hair so I'll stick to that wives tale 😂

Alderaan · 21/11/2019 06:01

The only thing that works for me is Remegel. I used it when I was pregnant with my daughter fifteen years ago and at the time it was readily available - these days I order it from the Boots website to be delivered to my local branch. Gaviscon as Leo makes me gag and Rennies don't work.

Cjo99 · 21/11/2019 08:23

@Alderaan Gaviscon makes me gag aswell, cannot take it no matter how hard I try😂

@PixieDustt yes I’ve heard about that old wives tale! Babies born with loads of hair are so adorable! Both me and her dad were bald until we were about 2 so don’t know if that’ll be the case with this one but won’t know until jan!Grin

My friend swears by love heart sweets for heartburn x

thatwasMauijustmessingaround · 21/11/2019 08:43

I was also prescribed Omeprazole & it was a life saver. I only had a low dose but it did the job.

It's a tablet that works differently to Gaviscon etc.

Do NOT BUY EOMEPRAZOLE over the counter from the supermarket etc (nexium, etc). It's not the same thing and it's not known if it's safe in pregnancy.

Omeprazole IS licensed for use in pregnancy. Dr can prescribe it.

Some other things to try: (which you probably have already lol)

Don't eat or drink too close to bed time

Try sitting upright for an hour or two after eating

No onions, tomato, orange or anything that is known to spark heartburn

Eat smaller meals instead of big ones

Prop up yourself in bed. Eg cushions behind your back. Some people even put books under the top of the bed to slope it down!

Heartburn888 · 21/11/2019 10:10

I feel for you, hence my username 😂 you sound like you’ve done everything I would have suggested!

What about trying to eat cooling foods such as cucumber?

shwarmachameleon · 21/11/2019 11:13

Top tip for Gaviscon etc - take a sip of water and hold it in your mouth when you take the medicine. It stops it coating your mouth and therefore stops the gagging.

Cjo99 · 21/11/2019 17:35

@thatwasMauijustmessingaround oh dear I took Nexium for about a month and a half but stopped when it wasn’t working...

@shwarmachameleon that’s a great idea, I’ll try that next timeSmile

Thanks everyone for the tips! Weirdly enough since I’ve posted this the heartburn hasn’t been as bad!😂😂
