Haemorrhoids (piles) in pregnancy (Joy!)

Oh joy of joys! I thought I had got away with having piles in pregnancy as I haven't had any constipation.

Last week I got the mother of all coughs and the coughing has caused me to have a MASSIVE thrombosed haemorrhoid. It is AGONY.

The doc has prescribed me some cream which gives minimal relief and suggest cold packs and sit in a cold bath (exactly what I need at 33 weeks pregnant). I can barely sit or walk.

Unfortunately the doc isn't very optimistic that it will go away by itself and said if I wasn't pregnant he would be sending me for to have it operated on...

I am of course sh*tting myself about going into labour with it still there!!!

Anyone got any advice or been in this situation going into labour?!

Oh poor u... Mine have been horrendous. Did ur Dr not give u any steroid cream? It took the edge off mine and once ran out I just carried on using anusol and the one massive external one I have is still bleeding on and off but is no longer painful

Some might be TMI, sorry in advance.

I suffer with haemmoroids since my first pregnancy( 11 years ago). It got worse after each labour and had bleeding at times with so much pain. The thing that I learnt is to have always the creams at hand ( there is one which makes miracles, not sure if I'm pregnancy is fine but sure after birth you can use. I try to remember to drink a bit more than recommend and eat really starchy food, so I go regularly to the toiled and not needing to strain.

If I feel it's hard to go, I don't wait days! I use a glicerine suppository to help and it's always worked. That's what I always have after birth just in case I get a bit constipated.

In labour I didn't have an issue with it, but I also always had an epidural.

When I feel all it's getting a bit uncomfortable down there and had some piles rupturing, I wash each time I go to the loo and pat, it help keeping all dry and clean.

In some cases you might need an operation especially if they rupture continually and cause lots of pain and bleeding, but I found that I need to know how to take care of them so far.

Mine popped out 1 week before I gave birth to DS.
It was really sore but once labour started I forgot I even had a bum hole, let alone piles!
Sorry to have to tell you that DS (and therefore my piles) are almost 11. I could probably get them seen to but they rarely bother me too much (and I’m a big chicken)

No I wasn't given a steroid cream, just a prescription for Anusol.
I'm honestly in so much pain tonight, I can't ever recall being in this much pain in my life!
Everything I read keeps saying they will go after baby is born.
Well I can't imagine feeling like this for another 2 months Confused

Sheriproct is fab stuff and is okay for pregnancy - it's prescription based though. Steroid to shrink plus it has an amazingly relieving pain killer jncluded. I had it when I was pg (4yrs ago!) as I got a massive pile that was also thrombosed and caused me agony for about 10days before it went down a bit (i was 39wks pg!). Anyway, doctors will fob you off with anosol which does nothing to help as doesn't contain a painkiller or steroid to shrink - it can help soothe minor ones but it won't touch a thrombosis one. Go back and demand something stronger. I ended up going online to an online uk doctor (see: pharmacy online UK) where you fill in a form online and a GP reviews it and either signs the prescription for you or rejects. Was so relieved!

Update:
After a second sleepless night, where I couldn't even lay still the pain was so bad, I went to a&e at 5am this morning!
The doctor said it was bad and that he wanted a surgeon to look at it.
The surgeon refused to do anything until I am 37 weeks. Gutted.

I now have some numbing gel and codeine which has meant I got some sleep this afternoon at least!

Make sure to take stool softener (laxido is good) and or a gentle laxative with codeine as it can bung you up and make it hard to go - not a good idea when you're suffering with piles as it can cause more!

Junobug · 20/11/2019 21:24

You absolutely can use a steroid cream so try and push for some as it makes such a difference. I hope you've managed to get some relief.

rachb2019 · 20/11/2019 21:51

Glad the codeine is helping - just be careful because it can give you the worst constipation ever (to the point that you have to strain on the toilet, which isn't going to improve the piles) :(

ColdCottage · 07/12/2019 01:39

How are you doing now?

elvis4nuts · 07/12/2019 06:37

@ColdCottage Funnily enough, just as the first one has calmed down, I got another thrombosed one on Thursday 😭 Pregnancy is brutal!!!!

Oh god @elvis4nuts I feel your pain. I just came on to post about thrombosed piles 😱 It doesn't sound as bad as yours but I'm pregnant with twins and the piles I've had since about 25 weeks have suddenly doubled in size and turned purple-y black. Sorry, TMI but it's like a fat bunch of grapes hanging out my butt. And it's getting harder and harder to push them back in 😟 Doc prescribed some cream and suppositories but they don't contain steroids, just lidocaine. The suppositories help a bit but they are not going away. So painful when they escape!

Wondering if anyone has any home remedies that are helping? Will they just go away after the birth? I'm having a section so at least they won't be made worse by pushing.

Ugh, just the worst side-effect of pregnancy IMO.
