Cybex Prams

Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience of cybex prams? Particularly the priam with the cloud z lie flat car seat?

We were thinking of buying the travel system but swapping the carry cot for the car seat ( as it lies flat!) - first baby, I know they can't stay in them for hours anyway but the lie flat is supposed to prolong the amount of time they can stay in then meaning they don't need to be transferred from car to pram if going to be a few hours. It sounds good- in reality is it just a gimmick?

The pram is lovely and light to steer but any experience anyone has had with them it would be great to hear!

I tried it but chose the Uppababy as the carrycots for both models can be used for overnight sleeping. The cloud z is a very good carseat and we did buy it but only lies flat while attached to a pram and isn’t designed for overnights.

Cantdoitanymorehelp · 18/11/2019 11:41

Have you tried lifting it? I looked at 3 years old but it was too heavy for me to lift in and out of the boot of the car.

ineedanotherholiday · 18/11/2019 11:46

@Cantdoitanymorehelp I did try lifting it yesterday it seemed ok but that was without a baby in it! Grin

@GrumpyHoonMain thank you, I wasn't aware the car seat only laid flat whilst attached to the pram.

I did know it wasn't for overnights but if you can keep a baby for up to 2 hours in a normal car seat how long would you say this extends it by- when attached to the pram so laid flat?

I'm trying to see if worth it as in reality they're unlikely to be in the car seat that long without being taken out to hold, feed, change whatever but the advantage seems to be staying in the car seat and attaching straight to the pram, rather than using a carry cot also.

I don't have a cybex pram but I have the cybex iCloud car seat that lays flag and mountain buggy that has attachments that the cybex connects on to. I expect a lot of buggies are compatible?

The car seat is v good. And the new model just out is significantly lighter. The only thing is you have to remember to lengthen the straps when you lay it down! But it does go almost flat and my 4 week old happily sleeps in it

PrayingandHoping · 18/11/2019 11:54

The car seat can lay flat anywhere except when it's attached to the isofix base or when strapped into the car! So if you brought it into the house you could lay it flat etc. When I take my dogs training my husband has been waiting in the cat with my baby and laying the seat flat while waiting.

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/11/2019 11:58

The manufacturer suggested no longer than 30mins at a time in the seat while they are don’t have neck control, and I believe them. The seat doesn’t look totally 180 degrees flat even on a pram.

And I do agree with a pp that it’s heavy. Most pram carrycots are a lot lighter even with the baby inside. We got it mainly because it lasts up to 13kg and the brand is fantastic when it comes to engineering (even by German standards). When I get my car I’ll probably get a fixed seat (tempted by the Sirona).

PrayingandHoping · 18/11/2019 12:10

@GrumpyHoonMain have u got a link there the manufacturer has said newborns can't lay in it in the flat position for more than 30 minutes? I agree it's not 100% flat but it is v close and I did lots of research before I bought mine and spoke to the independent shop I bought it from and they recommended it exactly for the reason that when you lay it flat you can then leave your newborn in it for more than 30 mins (if you were to bring your sleeping baby into the house for example which it the example they use on their website)

INeedNewShoes · 18/11/2019 12:18

Not answering your question, but we had a Jane Matrix Light 2 carrycot which can be used for overnight sleeping and as a car seat. It is very heavy but if you’re looking for a lie-flat car seat that attaches to a pushchair chassis it’s great. You can also sit the seat up to become a pushchair seat or upright car seat (though I found that in my car the upright set-up didn’t recline enough on my car’s tilted seats for me to be happy for DD to do anything but short journeys like that).

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/11/2019 13:01

No link - I spoke to them.

girlanonymous · 18/11/2019 14:03

I have the Cybex Eternis M3 from when I had my son. Didn't get the travel system, just the pram and it's great. A lot more sturdy than the Hauck travel system pushchair. The wheels are a lot stronger so you can go for longer walks. Just going to buy a Cybex car seat so I can use the old pram with it because it's lasted.

Milo90 · 18/11/2019 14:34

I looked at this at baby show and found maxi cosi much better, plus it's compatible with most prams however I can't remember if compatible with cybex

ineedanotherholiday · 18/11/2019 19:49

Thank you all, it sounds like most of you get on with the car seat.

@GrumpyHoonMain if no longer than 30 mins is correct then it doesn't seem worth it to me. I thought babies could stay on standard car seats for up to two hours (even if I'm reality they don't for that period) and that this car seat was supposed to lengthen that time with the lie flat option hmmm

Recent research has shown that a baby’s oxygen sats start dropping after 20 minutes in a car seat. This is why the guidance changed to 30 minutes max at a time. Obviously thousands of babies survive extended periods in a car seat but the stats should be enough to not be dismissive of the issue.

It’s called positional asphyxia and it does actually happen.

PrayingandHoping · 18/11/2019 20:30

Standard car seats have the rule of newborns not being in them for more than 30 mins as research has shown a decrease in their oxygen levels

The store I bought my seat from has confirmed that when laid flat a child can stay in there for more than 30 minutes as told to them by the manufacturer.... This seat is their best seller and they are in close contact with cybex. And cybex website also talks about bringing sleeping children in from cars and laying them flat to continue their sleep.

So there seems to be mixed messages out there

🤷‍♀️

ineedanotherholiday · 18/11/2019 20:33

@PrayingandHoping yeah def some mixed messaging going on

Oh goodness I didn't know the guidance had changed to 30mins so glad I know that now!

Hi @GrumpyHoonMain just wondering would you recommend the cybex z car seat ? We are looking at uppa vista. The Joie and Cybex lie flats are compatible but the Joie is double the weight and can only be base attached but can lie flat in the car so wondering if the con of the cybex not lying flat in the car is worth the money!! Thanks so much

Nat4392 · 04/07/2021 10:48

@DABY I have the cybex cloud z and can definitely recommend it. The lie flat feature cannot be used whilst in the car for safety purposes, no car seat will do this, you can only lie it flat whilst out of the car.

DABY · 04/07/2021 10:56

@Nat4392 ah thanks a million that's good to know you'd recommend . I had read the Jane Matrix and Joie could extend out whilst in the car but maybe its not recommended so that's good to know! This buggy and car seat buying is a mine field so really appreciate the advice 😊

ElderMillennial · 04/07/2021 11:15

We've got the car seat as we considered it one of the safest you can get.

Newborns should only be in a car seat for up to 30 mins.

You should get the carry cot if you can,

BertieBotts · 04/07/2021 11:38

It's only 30 minutes for the first 4 weeks. Thereafter the old 2 hour limit applies. Also that is based on a normal car seat, there isn't any specific research on the Cybex ones (or similar designs that recline) so the same advice applies regardless but you can use your common sense.

In any case - it's not a true replacement for a carrycot because in a carrycot, they are completely flat, have space to move and no restraints. In a car seat they are kind of cradled in a semi-reclined position (even with these lie-flat ones they aren't 100% flat) and they have quite tight restraints in order to keep them in place in the car, so they can't really move naturally. If you don't plan to use the buggy that much then this isn't a huge problem. If they are likely to spend a lot of time in there then it's important they have time to move normally/naturally and not be so restricted.

The seat unit on the Priam lies completely flat, so can be used as a replacement for a carrycot. The baby is still strapped in so it's not totally like a carrycot, but it's better than a car seat where they're quite immobile.

The Joie i-Level, Nuna Arra and Maxi Cosi Marble can all be laid "flat" in the car rear facing. This is fine to do and they get decent crash test results like this. The downside of them is they can't be fitted without the isofix base. The Jané one lays flat in the car but sideways like a carrycot type seat taking up two seats.

I think the Priam is a bit overpriced for what you get, you might want to look at the Cybex Balios S Lux as this is quite similar in design but not as expensive (even though it uses many of the same parts!) If it's the look of the Priam you like then you won't get that with the Balios though.

DABY · 04/07/2021 14:39

@ElderMillennial thanks a mill , we will get the carrycot as well for sure! Safety is key so it's good to know:)

DABY · 04/07/2021 14:42

@BertieBotts wow thank you so much that's all really helpful really appreciate it. Literally all the info I've been looking at in one 😊 I think the cybex is what we'll go for alright as safety is so important. We will likely be doing a lot if long journeys as families are so far away hence we thought lie flats but you're right not keeping them too long so we'll be having breaks on the journeys anyways. Thanks again , fountain of lie falt car seat knowledge 😍

Sept2021xxxx · 04/07/2021 18:40

We bought the mamas and papas ocarro bundle which came with the cybex cloud Z car seat so we gave the option of the lighter pram but can still attach the car seat where baby can lay flat x

DABY · 05/07/2021 09:16

@Sept2021xxxx that's a great idea too, we haven't seen the mama and papas yet so it's next on your list !
