I did. We wanted to be prepared and know potentially what to expect. They took the extra measurements and maybe a blood test, came back to say low risk but obviously that's not no risk. I'm in county Durham and the midwife did say that up here there is private screening (£300) so if it had shown high risk we could do a test to essentially search for the baby's dna in my blood and that way you'd get a definitive answer. This would have meant no need for amniocentesis and therefore no risk to baby. Friends of mine havent done the tests but as they do lots of measurements at the 20 week scan, I felt reassured they'd be looking there too.

GetTheSprinkles · 13/11/2019 15:57

Yep. I take the viewpoint that the more I know, the more prepared I can be. However, I would have to think long and hard about any tests that could possible affect baby e.g. amniocentesis

mrssunshinexxx · 13/11/2019 16:00

I'm just stuck with the view point of whatever it comes back whether that is 1 in 10000 or 1 in 150 no result is saying you have no chance

Yes, with my thought being I would terminate a pregnancy with a chromosome disorder.

My second pregnancy came back very high risk. Further testing was Negative but it wasn’t a given we would abort. We didn’t discuss it. I think we would’ve, but the decision wouldn’t have been as straight forward as I thought

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 13/11/2019 16:21

Yep. I take the viewpoint that the more I know, the more prepared I can be.

That's the reason we had the screening tests done. And while yes I agree that there's always a chance things could be ok, I just couldn't not know if there was a good chance of a condition that would be incompatible with life. I just couldn't invest the attachment carrying a baby for another 6 months not knowing if would die shortly after birth or not.

DH and I did discuss and had decided to pay for the non-invasive harmony test if anything came back at risk, luckily it didn't.

SparkyBlue · 13/11/2019 16:28

I had the harmony test done as DC3 was a complete shock and this helped to put my mind at ease. My gp highly recommended it

Robs20 · 13/11/2019 16:28

Yes. I had mine yesterday and came back high risk. I’m having the cvs tomorrow. Totally devastated but would rather be prepared. Dd1 had a serious condition that was undiagnosed throughout pregnancy. I spent the first 6 months of her life with severe pnd due to the shock.

Passthecherrycoke · 13/11/2019 16:29

Good luck robs x

artio0 · 13/11/2019 16:29

I did the standard ones they offer on the NHS, I don't remember what exactly they were except for the ultrasound measurements. I don't know what I would've done if they came back positive with anything, probably would depend on what exactly, but I wanted the choice.

mrssunshinexxx · 13/11/2019 16:30

@Robs20 I'll be thinking of you let us know how you get on x

Yes because i already has a child and a child that may remain childlike for life, is not for me. Having said that when the risk came back 1:22, I was less sure about what I wanted. I had more tests though and all was well

Yeahyeahyeahyeeeeah · 13/11/2019 16:35

@Robs20 I hope it goes well. I had a cvs and it was fine. Not pleasant, but fine. Flowers

LucileDuplessis · 13/11/2019 16:42

Yes I did. For one pregnancy I was given a risk of 1 in 200 so I opted to have an amnio which came back as zero risk.

OhDearEthel · 13/11/2019 16:43

Yes, I had the harmony. Personally I would terminate a foetus with any of the trisomies.

LassoOfTruth · 13/11/2019 16:44

I had the tests and would do so again, to be prepared, and to be prepared to terminate. My BIL has Down's. He is much loved by us all but it's not all sunshine and rainbows - he needs a very high level of care and has multiple (some serious) health problems now that he's getting older. His mum, my lovely MIL, has basically devoted her life to him, her youngest. It's not for me, I'm just not that saintly - nor would I want my older child/children to have to shoulder that burden when I'm gone. I'm pregnant now (very early days) and if I get to that stage and my results come back high risk I will probably go with the further testing - even with the amniocentesis the risk of causing harm is really really tiny.

loveyourself87 · 13/11/2019 16:45

My Edward and Patau's came back 1-11,345 and downs as 1-5967, I am thinking of going for the harmony test! I want to be prepared and have options x

PurpleGoose · 13/11/2019 16:51

Yes, my risk came back as 1:5. Had an amino and paid for a full karotype which ruled out the genetic that can be tested for. Baby is now a healthy 3 year old.

Second baby also had the tests. Risk was much lower so didn't have further testing, but I was having extra scans anyway due to growth issues in the first pregnancy (which were unrelated to anything the combined test looks for).

mrssunshinexxx · 13/11/2019 16:56

@loveyourself87 sorry if really ignorant - not intended but those numbers seem really low chance ? X

OP posts:
loveyourself87 · 13/11/2019 16:59

@mrssunshinexxx not ignorant at all! I'm just really worried with the downs results! I am doing a lot of research but as it's my first child, I think I want to be sure as I over think a lot x

Passthecherrycoke · 13/11/2019 17:01

Lass- the hardest thing I found when we were going through it was well meaning family telling us how sweet and happy and smiley downs children are Sad

@loveyourself87 it would just be a waste of money to have the harmony. It’s not diagnostic and your chances are minuscule

loveyourself87 · 13/11/2019 17:02

@Passthecherrycoke the harmony test I believe is a lot more accurate! I am thinking about it, personal choice x

Passthecherrycoke · 13/11/2019 17:05

The most it will go to is 1 In 50,000 so if you can accept that as a negative go for it. But if you’re that worried will that be enough?

loveyourself87 · 13/11/2019 17:09

@Passthecherrycoke I will do my research and do what makes me happy, thanks for your opinion

polkadotpixie · 13/11/2019 17:11

@loveyourself87 I had the 12 week screening followed by the Harmony test as my 1:2123 result for Down Syndrome scared me compared to the 1:15,000 result I got for Edwards/Patau. The best result you can get on Harmony is 1:10,000 but if you can afford it and it'll put your mind at rest then get it

I'm glad I spent the £500 because I could stop worrying (even though my result were low risk anyway I was still worried). I would have terminated for a positive trisomy result though and that may not be the case for you. It was worth it for me for my anxiety levels and sanity

loveyourself87 · 13/11/2019 17:13

@polkadotpixie thank you for sharing! Anything to put our minds at rest and peace of mind over money for me at any time. Glad you did what you felt was right for you x
