So I've just started a new job, I've been here a matter of weeks and I'm 16 weeks pregnant and they don't know.

When and how should I tell them? I'm worried about getting sacked, although I know I can't be sacked for pregnancy but I'm still on probation so technically they don't have to give me a reason...

Hi @someblonde. My manager has known for a while, as I had a scare early on and needed time off- but I'm planning on telling work 'officially' after my 15 weeks appointment next week (once I've heard that little heartbeat)...

At my place of work you don't have to inform until the 15th week prior to your estimated due date- but as I'm 'showing' pretty obviously already there's no way I could hold out that long.

You've got to do what's right for you though.

I'm pretty sure you can't get the sack for anything related to pregnancy- as you have extra protections- but it might be worth speaking confidentially to your HR department to find out what you need to do and when to do it by. Not sure if being on probation may effect you Mat pay- might be worth asking about that too.

After you have taken out family legal insurance (you can add it to your house insurance).

That way, if your employer fires you or otherwise decides to ignore laws around maternity leave & return to work, you’ll be able to sue.
Usually costs about £20.

Plenty of companies ignore the law, assuming you won’t be able to afford the £10000 in costs to take them to court. Legal aid is not generally available. So get insurance before you tell them anything. And tell them by email, blind copying a family member or friend. Timed, dated and legally admissible.
