Hi
I suffer with IBS and wondered if anyone knows if imodium is ok in pregnancy? My midwife didnt know and told me to speak to pharmacist but i am sure they will just say not to take it without knowing my medical history.
Would it harm my baby if i took it on some days? Thanks

I dont think it's supposed to be used in pregnancy. Maybe speak to your gp

R2D2abc · 12/11/2019 22:47

No! Definitely not! I wasn't even aloud to take it when breastfeeding!

Ask your GP for alternatives, but I remember pretty well also the leaflet states well that it goes to baby and also passes through breast milk.

acrazy · 12/11/2019 22:53

No! It can dehydrate the baby. Don't take Imodium at all

susie12345 · 20/11/2019 17:27

The only problem is that i go without food almost all day due to being so afraid of having ibs attack at work which i dont think is good for the baby either :(

One or two days without food it won't harm the baby, the placenta will take what baby needs from your reserves.

Medicines can be really dangerous in pregnancy, some of them can cause brain damage to baby and so having learning difficulties and disabilities.

I don't know what you could do eat with IBS but maybe some bland food will help your bowels to regulate a bit.

You should seek medical advice, for example GP, or if you can't hold anything in contact EPAU or ER, they can give you some stuff to keep you going eventually.

Hope you'll feel better soon.

@susie12345 I am now 23 weeks I am working full time. Initially the runny tummy drove me crazy and I would literally go days just eating bland foods such as toast and crackers ! I had a bad day yesterday with cramping and runny tummy so didn't eat much . I would recommend that you only eat the foods that cause you little to no discomfort if that means eating bread then do be it ! I was terrified baby wasn't growing enough as I couldn't eat a balanced diet but to my surprise he's actually bigger than expected . Do the following :

  1. Drink warm / hot water in the morning with squeezed lemon this will help settle the cramping and runny tummy (this has helped me since I can't take Imodium
  1. Stick to a low FODMAP diet
  1. Eat bland foods such as crackers , tomato soup (if you can tolerate it)
  1. Don't worry about the balanced diet I can't eat most fruits or veg and baby is fine and healthy I just eat what I can
  1. Take pregnacare Max Plus they give you after nutrients
  1. Order a prenatal probiotic I can PM you the one I use this will endure you have friendly bacteria in your gut
  1. If you can drink milk ( I can't ) take Kefir it's meant to be really good packed with probiotics for the gut
  1. Just tell yourself it's a phase and after baby you can take your medicine again . Even when I'm hours in the loo in pain I just try and stay positive eat as much as I can even if it's not much to others and you will get through x

Sorry for typos damn iPhone !

FairyDustSprinkles · 20/11/2019 23:11

@susie12345 breakfast have 2 slices of plain toast

Lunch : a plain soup such a tomato

Dinner : grilled salmon and rice

Obviously if these foods don't agree with you then don't but these seems to work for me

Fruits: strawberries are low in fructose so are a good choice to snack on

Crackers and rice cakes work wonders

Hi
Thank you for your message. Is it normal to wake up and have runny stool straight away? Its also pretty dark in colour, not just like it should be i think. Im such a worrier that now im worried about having bowel cancer :( i dont know whether this is just caused by pregnancy or if there is something wrong. :(

@FairyDustSprinkles hi can u please pm me what probiotics you take? Im willing to try anything. Im actually thinking the prenatal vitamins are causing me issues so think im going to stop taking them for a few days and see if it improves. Thank you

@susie12345 hi susie yes for me that's normal it's very dark in colour almost like tar and very sticky ! Kinda creeped me out in the beginning. My IBS leans towards the runny side rather than being constipated so i generally have loose stools most days . Before we got pregnant I had all the tests done as they thought I could have Crohn's but everything came back clear in the end they said it's IBS after 3 colonoscopies and much pain. I too worried I had bowel cancer but I would suggest you speak to your GP. Have you had any tests done ? Any stool tests ? This will rule out anything serious . They can send you for testing. I'll PM you x

susie12345 · 22/11/2019 08:27

Hi
I had tests done about 10 years ago, i actually now think its the vitamins i was taking, i didnt take it yesterday and my stools are brown colour. Still very runny so will probably try to find different vitamins to see if there is anything else i can take that wont give me runny stools so much. Im going to the loo at least 4 times in the morning before work and struggle to get through the day it sucks so much. Thought pregnancy was meant to be an exciting time and not so depressing :(
