When should you stop sleeping on your back?

I’m 15 weeks pregnant and suddenly worried that I’m still sleeping on my back. How much of a risk is this to the baby and do I need to start sleeping on my side now?

You should still be fine but if you start now trying to sleep on your side it will be easier once your bigger x

Thanks. How do I stop myself turning onto my back in my sleep? Just build a bank of pillows?

My midwife say upto 20 weeks isn't the end of the world. I'm almost 20 weeks and if I turn onto my back in the night I wake up because of the pressure I feel

Boymummy3 · 10/11/2019 12:33

If you turn on your back and wake up just turn back around but yeah pillows can help. As pp has said its more for when your later on in pregnancy and you wont be able too lie on your back because of the weight. Im 29 weeks now and i cant lie on my back at all because i cant breath its so uncomfortable x

Hi there the advice is that as long as you go to sleep on your side it doesn't matter how you wake up - just if you go back to sleep move back to your side again!
I started training myself early on and now I stay in my side, but I wake up every hour or so and roll over to the other side 🙄. I also bought the Asda massive pregnancy pillow and it's really helped with comfort levels!

Thanks everyone. I’m still very comfortable on my back (I barely have a bump) so hopefully it’s nothing to worry about at the moment!

I looked into this a bit and it seemed like for low risk pregnancies sleeping on your back isn't really a big problem - personally I tend to go to sleep on my side but often just lie on my back for a bit. The blood flow to baby is best lying on your left but it has little impact and it's probably more important to get a good night's sleep. www.mdedge.com/obgyn/article/208422/obstetrics/no-link-found-between-sleep-position-pregnancy-outcomes

I was told third trimester.

Babyg1995 · 10/11/2019 17:36

I was told from the third trimester by midwife .

If you wake up feeling dizzy then you know it's time to not be on your back! Do you have a pregnancy pillow? If you tuck this behind you it should stop you.

The Tommy’s website is the place for expert knowledge on this (and any other similar topics) - they are very clear that sleeping on back in third trimester has links to still births (i think 4 separate studies have shown that). I also wondered if it matters during 1st/2nd trimester. I think like pp says it’s good to get into practice now, but also, once you get bigger you won’t be able to breathe on your back anyway

BarleyG · 10/11/2019 21:07

I’m 24 weeks and still end up either on my back or on my tummy. You can’t help how you move when you’re asleep Confused

ELM8 · 10/11/2019 21:12

Third trimester is where it's most important but no harm in getting used to it before that as the third trimester is uncomfortable enough without having to get used to a new sleeping position on top of everything else.

Dream genii pregnancy pillow I've found is really good to help you stay on your side!

wondering7777 · 10/11/2019 22:17

Just checked Tommy’s and it says not to lie on your back for long periods from 16 weeks as it can cause low blood pressure and dizziness!

Nr 29 weeks and I wake daily on my back or belly.. How I don't know as I'm like a barrel.
I panic I've tried everything not to

They say left side but I have a bad hip on my. Left so can only tolerate for so long otherwise its agony.

I've now started using 4 pillows to prop up and sleep at 45 degrees sat up.
Plus helps with the shortness of breath

wondering7777 · 11/11/2019 04:16

I’m still lying on my front a bit as well - is that ok or am I squashing the baby?!

Bipbop2020 · 16/11/2019 17:04

As far as I'm aware front is fine - the only link has been to back sleeping! If front is comfy probably ok! Left is meant to be better but the research hasn't looked at this much I think! The research is also only into how you go to sleep - how you wake up wasn't looked into I think!
Tommy's is definitely the place to go though if you want more info!
