To sleepyhead?

DC2 is due in the new year. We didn’t have a sleepy head with DD but I’ve been strangely tempted by one this time round (mainly due to their portability with a toddler in tow)

What are people’s thoughts on them?

Lullaby trust states that they aren't safe to use. You will get many people who will come and say they used them and their baby is fine, but for me it just isn't worth the risk at all. As parents we are all individual and have to decide what level of risk we are willing to accept.

babycatcher411 · 09/11/2019 17:02

I agree with PP.
Whilst there is no current known evidence to say they are a danger, many other very similar items have been proven to be a risk to life and thus it would never be worth it for me.

littlemissalwaystired · 09/11/2019 17:06

They're not recommended due to the fact that if a baby rolls over, the material can suffocate them. The edges of the sleepyhead also make it easier for a baby to get trapped. Please don't buy one, they're not recommended for a reason. As a midwife we see the unfortunate effects of things like this.

Bol87 · 09/11/2019 17:21

I’ve been tempted this time as I had such a non sleeping baby last time but in the end, I don’t think I could take the risk..

I have to say though, this whole thing about babies rolling.. how many newborns can roll?! And by the time my kid could roll (about 4 months), she could roll in both directions.. I’m not doubting the concerns at all just, just trying to understand it!

Pinkflipflop85 · 09/11/2019 17:48

My newborn somehow manages to end up on her side every night. I think it's the way she stretches her head back!

Zeldetta · 09/11/2019 17:54

Really littleMiss? I thought lullaby trust aid sleepyheads had not been linked to any deaths, but aren’t recommended as not flat.

OP did you mean for overnight sleeping or supervised naps?

Gettingonabitnow · 09/11/2019 18:15

OMG do it - it’s amazing. All my friends said it works wonders and it does, order it today, can’t wait to use it for DC2! X

onetimeonlyy · 09/11/2019 18:38

Depends how you plan to use it. We have one of those sofas that has a long bit coming out out you can lie on it was great for me to use with baby when he was little and napping on sofa I could lie next to him and know he was safe but still near me. I didn't use it for him to sleep in over night.

I have a friend whose daughter is 10 months and can't sleep without it - that's a problem.

Also it probably only lasted till he was 4/5 months and he was too long and moving too much anyway

MyDcAreMarvel · 09/11/2019 18:39

Definitely not they are a SIDS risk.

schafernaker · 09/11/2019 18:45

Supervised naps. For night time we have a Moses basket. I'm almost certainly having a csection and just do not fancy dragging Moses basket around the house 🤷🏻‍♀️

Did for both my DC's. They were very happy in it but also fine without.

True they don't last long as even my tiny pair were too wide for it by 4mo.

I put a blanket in so the sides were more graduated and also used a movement monitor for peace of mind.
If you're not up for using one, you could maybe roll a small towel under the cot sheets in a similar shape to give them the feel of security.

Lunafortheloveogod · 09/11/2019 18:58

For the cost of the sleepyhead ( had the same idea something for downstairs naps so I didn’t have to get a baby and a basket upstairs on my own) we just got another Moses basket from Aldi.

Meant he was always used to sleeping on the same type of surface not from being cocooned up to an open flat surface. And it was £20 vs over £100. If you’ve got space to have the pram up you can use it too. I didn’t as the pram was in the kitchen, cooking smoke, door open for the dogs to go out.. and obviously the dogs barking suddenly probably wouldn’t have been the best for a tiny sleeper.

WhiteLaundry · 09/11/2019 19:18

Don't do it! They're very expensive and dangerous and will cause your DC to become reliant on them to fall asleep!

MyDcAreMarvel · 09/11/2019 22:00

Why would you need to drag a basket round the house? Just buy two.

20viona · 10/11/2019 09:50

Iv got a purflo baby nest and it's amazing. It's slightly bigger than a sleepyhead and half the price. It's got breathable fabric too. Our baby loves it and sleeps on the sofa in it during the day. It also fits in the snuzpod and she sometimes sleeps in it in that.

Jollymollyx · 10/11/2019 14:05

If they were really bad they would be taken off the shelves

I’ve used in the past and intend to again. They are breathable fabric so my dd use to have put her nose against the side and was fine.

The baby sleeps so much better in them and they are portable yes so I always put it on the sofa in the day.
Easier to keep an eye on them than putting them upstairs for naps. Apparently you’re meant to always be with a sleeping baby until 6m but that’s impossible if you had a baby sleeping upstairs in a non portable space

MyDcAreMarvel · 10/11/2019 16:44

You naivety is shocking.
Like I said buy a Moses basket for downstairs. You are risking an accident twofold but using a nest and then by putting a baby on a couch.

georgialondon · 10/11/2019 16:50

For daytime naps they are amazing and fantastic for moving around the house.

georgialondon · 10/11/2019 16:51

They are not a sids risk for daytime use.

Amanduh · 10/11/2019 17:25

For daytime use, if constantly supervised, maybe, but not worth the price for that. The ‘breathability’ of material is irrelevant and people are falsely lured in to it.
There are a lot of dangerous products that are a sids and death risk that are sold, eg cot bumpers.
I couldn’t take the risk.
