I recently had an early miscarriage (5+3) with my first ever pregnancy. I’ve been generally fine, these things happen and we’re planning to try again in January, but went for follow up blood test at EPU yesterday and the nurse said I’m A Rh Negative and should be aware for future pregnancies especially now I’ve had a loss and might need injections in another pregnancy, but wasn’t very good at explaining

I’ve been googling and can see if I’m pregnant in future with an A+ baby I might need injections to stop my body producing antibodies and attacking the baby? And so higher risk for late term miscarriage/still birth, possibly more now I’ve had one loss?

But I can’t quite get my head round it, is there anything I need to be aware of as we start to try again? Thought there would likely be some women with experience here!

@BuffaloCauliflower I'm also A rhesus negative and expecting too! I think when they do bloods they will see if you have any antibodies from previous pregnancies). Mine were negative so I just have to have a couple of anti d injections throughout this pregnancy and also if I have any knock to the bump (from 12 weeks onwards) I have to call them for advice. I think it's fairly common so the midwives know what to do in that situation.

Because Dh knew he was neg as well I didn’t need the anti d. They did offer it, but agreed it was unnecessary if I knew he was the father so I had three kids and no anti d

It’s well worth getting his blood tested as then you may not need to worry about a test for the baby. You can buy a blood test from amazon for a few quid, we did it for the kids as they wanted to know. It’s informative and fun!

I had anti-d after I had medical management of a missed miscarriage but already knew I was rhesus negative as so was my mum so I was tested at birth. It was my second pregnancy. When I was pregnant with my daughter I had anti-d at 28 weeks then they tested her cord blood at birth and as she is rhesus positive I had anti-d before I was discharged after the birth.
As other have said it is due to among anti bodies against a rhesus positive fetus but if you have the anti-d it won't cause issues is subsequent pregnancies.

I am also A-, I have had two miscarriages a healthy child and I am currently 24 weeks pregnant. The rhesus factor becomes an issue if your blood and the foetus/babies blood mixes. You may create antibodies which could bind to the blood cells of the baby making them anaemic. It is only a big deal if no one knows - if the midwives know then you get two extra injections in pregnancy of Anti-D which will remove any antibodies before they harm any future foetus.

Hope it’s ok to ask on this thread but I am also A Rh neg.

I am having my anti d injection on Tuesday when I will be 29 weeks. Is it simply the injection on this day or do they also do routine bloods?

I only ask as I have not had any bloods done since my 9 week booking appointment and have been very itchy over the last week and a half so feel
I need them checking sooner rather than later... after the injection I have another 12 day wait for the community MW.

Thank you

I’m A- and when my baby was born he was A+ so they gave me a shot of anti-D just in case any of his blood entered my system and caused an immune response.

Thanks @dementedpixie.

I’m A-ve too eldest is 18 and I bled all the way through my pregnancy with him so had lots of anti d. Similar with my 3 youngest but by 4th son I just got the jag at 28 weeks and after birth, no miscarriages thankfully - am high risk due to another condition.
