Mattress too big for crib

Hello all, hoping someone can help me with this.

My parents have gifted me with the beautiful swing crib they used when I was a baby and I’m thoroughly in love with it. Trouble is, the standard sized mattresses from eg. Mothercare are about 2cm too long and 2cm too wide for it. Is there any way I can get away with cramming a slightly oversized mattress in, or am I going to have to go down the custom made route…? (Don’t especially want to as I’m a cheapskate!)

Thanks!

Have you searched other places for the size you need? Amazon places like that x

stitchwitch85 · 08/11/2019 19:42

Yes, tried all over the place but can’t find a standard mattress of the right size. Looks like it’ll have to be custom 🙄

It's not what you asked....but have you checked that the gaps between the bars on the crib are the right size (if it has bars). Many older cribs/cots don't meet safety standards.

I’ve crammed a mattress into a travel cot for a night or two - and that was when DS was an ‘older baby’ about 6 months +, but definitely not the everyday cot. It needs to be flat and fit properly for safe sleeping. I think it’s will need to be costum made of you can’t find anything suitable.

Thanks for the replies. Custom made it is…

To the PP who said check safety, it's not quite 100% compliant but it's actually going to be a "day bed" sort of thing rather than his proper cot, for use when I’m sitting in the kitchen with him (warmest room in the house). We won’t be using it once he’s more mobile, I expect we will be using a baby bouncer by then. But I would like to use it just a bit, even if only for a short time!

If it’s just for the day, couldn’t you buy a thin latex mattress and just cut it down to the right size?

Nightmanagerfan · 08/11/2019 20:01

Baby mattresses online is an excellent company

I bought a strange shaped travel cot and was atill able to get a mattress on amazon for £20. They have so many different sizes. Have you tried putting in the size in inches and cm?

BertieBotts · 08/11/2019 20:14

There's a really cheap company online who make made to measure mattresses. I think it's that baby mattresses online. They are good and I would use them.

However, not to be a downer, but I'd check up whether your old crib meets current safety regulations - some useful pointers in this article: www.madeformums.com/reviews/guide-to-buying-secondhand-cots-cribs-cotbeds-and-travel-cots/

BertieBotts · 08/11/2019 20:16

Do you know which bits of it aren't compliant? It would just be useful for you to know what exactly the risk factor is, as it may affect how you are comfortable using it.

GrumpyHoonMain · 08/11/2019 20:32

You might be able to find a carrycot mattress to fit.

fglitter · 08/11/2019 21:05

Baby mattresses online is a great site for custom mattresses. They are reasonably priced and good quality - I’ve used a few times for crib/pram/cot mattresses now. Worth checking their FB page for a discount code before buying as they often do them.

stitchwitch85 · 08/11/2019 21:37

Thank you so much for the tips - I will check out the suggested sites.

As for how it is non compliant - it's lower than the recommended 50cm from mattress to top of crib, plus it has knobs on. It'll be fine while he’s not so mobile but once he’s pulling himself up it’ll have to go away again. Still, it's lovely for now.

Oh yes, well, that sounds fine. I think once he's pulling up it's likely you'll want him napping in another room anyway (just my experience) as they tend to get more easily disturbed if they are with you then, but when they are little you want them close.

noimaginationatall · 09/11/2019 21:01

I went into my local baby store today to ask about a crib mattress and they asked me to check the size as they are all different sizes apparently. Worth checking with a local baby store before ordering custom made?
