39 weeks pregnant - thrush again! Can I use Canesten internal cream?

I had thrush a few weeks ago and used a Canesten pessary which I hated using but it did do the trick in clearing up thrush.

I now seem to have thrush again and I dont want to use a pessary again, can I use the Canesten internal cream?

Anyone else used this when preg?

Thanks

I'm fairly sure I did, and I was definitely prescribed the cream version when I was bf. Check the level of clotrimazole in it - if it is a stronger concentration than a pessary, it might be an idea to double check with your midwife.

Wilkie · 18/08/2007 19:16

Why didn't you lke the pessary? Not sure about the internal cream TBH.

TBH - you may as well ride it out. The birth will clear it up.

I had thrush for 10 weeks from 28-39 weeks. It disappeared after I had given birth and bled for a few days.

BTW - with you being so close to due date, do not use without checking medical advice as you may already have started to dilate in which case it would not be adviseable.

Like you, I kept using canesten but it kept coming back.

The only thing that seemed to keep it at bay was adding lavender oil to the bath - and having a bath twice a day. Oh, and I put the oil on a pad as well.

Spidermama · 18/08/2007 19:29

Right. Here's my tried and tested method oft scorned by those who haven't tried it, lauded by those who have.

Drop a little tea tree oil into a peeled garlic clove, thread some cotton through the clove for easy retrieval later) then place it up inside the vagina overnight.

It worked like magic for me every time.

RibenaBerry · 18/08/2007 19:32

Spidermama - slightly delicate question, but didn't your vagina smell, well, rather unpleasant afterwards, or does the tea tree counteract the garlic?

pobletsmum · 18/08/2007 19:33

Probably best to get advice from your GP. That way you can get a free prescription for the cream/whatever too. Hope it clears up and that all goes well for the birth.

I like the smell of tea tree and garlic.

I don't think the smell drifted to those around me but then I wouldn't have cared if it had tbh. Anyway it wears off in a day or two. I'm sure DH would rather get a gobful of garlic and tea tree than a gobful of Canesten.

For me the thrush was completely gone within 48 hours (and I'd tried the creams beforehand which had, if anything, made it worse).

RibenaBerry · 18/08/2007 19:41

I like the smell of tea tree and garlic, but only in certain places .

See your point about it being nicer than Canesten, but I know how desperate I always am to get the smell of garlic off my fingers when I've been cooking. Just don't like it on me. I think I'd be tempted to scrub the whole 'area' far too harshly to get rid of it!

RibenaBerry · 18/08/2007 19:42

Oh, meant to say, but if it works it's got to be nicer than that cream.

Desperate times, desperate measures!

Spidermama · 18/08/2007 20:43

I think it's more likely to linger on the fingers as I also scrub my fingers after garlic chopping. I don't remember the smell lingering for long down below. Perhaps it's the self cleaning nature of the fanjo, or perhaps it's just its proximity to your nose (fingers are much closer.)

I love you spidermama! that has made me laugh out loud

Amester · 18/08/2007 21:20

Thanks for replying everyone - I didn't think anyone would!

Good point Wilkie that I may have started dilating - I didn't even think about that.

Thanks for your alternative method Spidermama - sounds a bit scary but I guess it can't do any harm!

I think I'm going to have to go and see the doctor aren't I - I just hate embarrasing things like this but I suppose I should get used to it seeing as I'm going to be giving birth soon!

Thanks again.

Just don't do the garlic thing just before going to DR!
