I tend to get them if I don’t pee immediately after having sex. Also make sure you are wiping front to back.
You may need a stronger antibiotic or you may need to take it for a longer duration than what they are giving it to you for. Also drink loads of water to help flush it out.
I have had uti’s in the past that I’ve had to take three different antibiotics for and a week off work as the infection completely wipes me.

Do you do all the normal advised stuff? Like wash daily with water, pee after sex, use cotton underwear, wipe front to back?

Have you been checked for diabetes?

Besidesthepoint · 07/11/2019 12:44

And no thong underwear, the moving around during the day can make bacteria travel more easily from back to front.

@Besidesthepoint thanks yes I have been doing all the normal stuff as above I havent been having sex so I dont get one I clean using just water ect and wipe correctly but still getting them I have so far had antibiotics for 7 days, 5 days and 2 x more 7 days but still not working when they tested my urine ect for diabetes it was all fine.

I never get water infections before this pregnancy not even in my last pregnancy but I do wear things but it's all I have ever worn since 16 but I wear cotton ones and to bed I wear knickers it's so frustrating

I have had several UTI's in my current pregnancy, it is not necessarily triggered by lifestyle (as discussed above) and can just be down to the hormonal and physical changes in pregnancy.

Other things you can do to try and prevent it reoccuring (as recommended by my midwife): improve your gut health by cutting down sugar, eating lots of prebiotic foods (yogurt, oats, fruit/veg, fermented foods), taking a high quality probiotic, drinking absolutely loads of water, drinking unsweetened cranberry juice. For me the most effective preventative is drinking ridiculous amounts of water. If i feel a UTI coming on I can often clear it by drinking >3litres per day.

I had a lot of utis in my last pregnancy - I think I only had 1 midwife appointment where I wasn’t told I needed antibiotics. Unfortunately some people are just prone to infections, especially during pregnancy. I didn’t actually have any symptoms besides getting up during the night, but I thought that was just a pregnancy thing 😂
Try not to worry, although a trip to the GP to have a chat about it won’t hurt

@peamad the only thing I have really tried is cranberry juice, I eat very healthy and eat oats, yoghurt, fruit and veg every day and my general gut bacteria is very good I dont feel the uti coming on I dont get symptoms I just know when I have one so it's hard I have been drinking lots of water it's so frustrating I might see if docs can prescribe me a different antibiotic this time as when I have uti it makes me feel very poorly and tired more than normal thank you very much for your advice I will definitely be trying the cranberry juice xx

I really feel for you, it is really horrible having recurrent UTIs. I was prescribed nitrofurantoin ('Macrobid') for my last bout and I found it much more effective and with fewer side effects. Definitely take a probiotic too as improving the levels of natural bacteria/gut flora will help your body fight it off. I found this book helpful too www.amazon.co.uk/Gut-Health-Doctor-easy-digest/dp/0241355087?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I used to get cystitis quite often, and now I incorporate cranberry juice into my diet. Ever since then (when I drink it regularly enough) I haven't had a single flare up. I don't even like cranberry but I'll drink it over having a UTI any day of the week!

Have they actually grown it in the lab and had it analysed for resistance? It sounds like the antibiotics are not doing their thing and not getting rid of it so it may be a bacteria that responds better to a different antibiotic (especially if you’ve been prescribed the same one 4 times).

I get lots of UTIs due to a kidney problem, in and out of pregnancy and there is definitely more than one antibiotic available during pregnancy.
