Positive Stories Please - 6lb7oz Showing at 34 Weeks - Poss Gestational Diabetes

Hi,

So this is my first pregnancy, I'm 28, 5'2", petite and pre pregnancy weighed around 120 Pounds.

I have exercised throughout pregnancy, just swimming and yoga at the moment, and have a fairly healthy diet, I don't over indulge or eat take away (morning sickness got rid of those for me). I go for the occasional naughty meal but once every couple of weeks if that.

My past 3 midwife appointments I've been measuring big, as in way above the high line on the graph on my notes. I had a growth scan yesterday and he's showing at 6lb7oz already, I'm 34+4

His other measurements (which I'm afraid don't mean anything to me) are:

HC 327.4mm 83%
AC 328.3mm 98%
Femur 69.0mm 85%
EFW 6lb7oz

I've got a test on Tuesday for Gestational Diabetes. The nurse yesterday explained if I have that, I will likely be induced around 38 weeks. But then even if I don't have it, and he continues to grow as he has been, I will be induced around then anyway as they won't want me to go full term with him that big as predicted.

She commented that I didn't look very big (which a lot of people have, apparently I'm carrying very neatly).

I was just wondering if anyone had any similar experiences? Positive stories? Where maybe their baby didn't come out really heavy, despite this showing at the growth scan. Or should I just be prepared for a big baby?

My OH is 6'5" and weighed 11lbs7oz Haloween Sad , so I'm getting a little terrified at the thought of giving birth to such a huge baby. Especially as this is my first pregnancy. I weighed less at full term when I was born, than DS is showing now.

Pregnancy is so stressful isn’t it? I measured big at 30 weeks, was tested for gestational diabetes and tested negative. Then a few weeks later, long story short but I was tested for GD again and failed by a small margin, so was diagnosed with possible GD. I followed a healthy, high protein diet (no medicating) as a precaution for the last 6 weeks and my DS came out under 8 pounds, so a perfectly average weight.

However, with what you’ve said about your husband, I suspect you might just be having a big baby! My dad is 6”3 and my brother, sister and I were all just under 10lb at birth. My poor mum is only 5”3, but she gave birth to all of us naturally and without pain relief (I have no idea how she managed that!) She was regularly tested for diabetes but always negative.

So it could all just be in the genes! Not massively helpful when you’re worried about a big baby, but you’ll be monitored regularly, so it’s great it’s been identified early. Although pretty bad for your stress levels I would imagine! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

Just to clarify my post, I don’t think you get a medal for no pain relief, I certainly had it for my first (and tried to for my second but ran out of time Shock) I was just trying to illustrate that my mum had a straightforward birth with no complications!

I've had several GTT's due to my weight. Baby has been measuring big since my first growth scan. 7lb 1oz at 34 weeks. Negative results on GTT's. Midwife says some people just grow big babies. I get your anxiety, I haven't been offered induction until I go past term. For that reason I'm opting for an ELCS.

I've been measuring bigger since 24 weeks.at 24 weeks I measured 28 weeks. At 28 weeks I measured 31/32 weeks. I got sent for a growth scan at 25 weeks and baby was est to be around 2lb. Hes on the top line for his belly measurement they basically have said hes just going to be a chunky baby. I'll be having another growth scan soon. Also had to have the GTT test which came back negative.

As yourself my husband was born big he was over 12lb born and my youngest son was 9lb 8oz born.. I know it seems really big anything over 9lb but honestly between him and my eldest which was 7lb 11 it felt no different.

Growth Scans / bump measurements are also notorious for being wrong, I've not had this experience myself but I've read so many times people have been induced due to big baby and their baby has been less than 8lb... or vise versa baby was suppose to he on the smaller side and came out alot bigger. Try not worry yourself as untill you actually give birth you wont know how much baby weighs and by then you wont really be bothered x

I had a similar case to yourself - same height and and age. Bump kept measuring over despite everyone saying I didn't look big and bump looked neat.

At 36 week growth scan his estimated weight was 7 pounds 3 ounces and had high AC measurements. Was tested for GD and results came back negative.

He was born a week later at 37 weeks weighing 6 pounds, 12 ounces which I was told was a really good weight. He also didn't have a big belly at all.

My midwife was never particularly concerned as his growth was following a steady line and growth scans can be out by some margin anyway.

Thank you everyone who has posted replies!

It is very stressful at the moment, I've not had the most stress free pregnancy, lots of bleeding early on in the pregnancy. My 20 week scan showed my placenta low lying. Then a growth scan at 28 weeks as I was measuring big they thought I had excess water. I feel like I've been to the doctors or the hospital all the way through my pregnancy!

Luckily yesterday at the Placenta check, it has moved away and up to the right so that's one less worry.

I'm a worrier in general (and do suffer from Anxiety quite badly generally), and with this being my first I just have no idea what to expect, so assuming the worst.

For those who have had an elective c section, I wasn't aware this was an option? I would like to try for a natural birth as I want the experience, but my anxieties at the minute with the possible weight at full term is scaring me a little.

I'll try not to worry too much then right now, I have the GTT test on Tuesday, Midwife Thursday and then another Growth Scan the week after so hopefully will know more after all of those.

They picked up GD in my pregnancy around 35/36 weeks. I tested my blood four times a day, followed a low carb / high protein diet and was prescribed something that I can no longer remember the name of!

I had an elective section at 39 weeks. I'd been warned that he was going to be a whopper, but was only 8lb 7oz in the end. Not the 10lb mega baby I'd been prepared for!
